The frame is the same the same as the one I have, 0095440. Mine was all 105 components, an unbranded CF seatpost, Cinelli handlebar and stem. The seat post finally shattered maybe six years ago.

Thinking I might have to flip it. It’s a beautiful bike but it just doesn’t fit me correctly. I’m torn as to whether or not I should sell it as a hole bike or frame set and parts. It’s all Shimano 600 except record shifters and seat tube... Any ideas/suggestions. It’s to bad it really is a nice bicycle.

I do not have enough knowledge to advise about selling parts or whole bike. If you decide to sell some parts I would be interested in the handlebars, stem and seatpost. Possibly the wheels.

Just noticed no one answered you. WD-40 is sometimes useful for stuck nuts and bolts, but PB Blaster is much better, and Kroil is supposed to be the best. Also ATF and acetone in a 50-50 mix is frequently highly recommended. Apply whatever you have, tap on the nut, wait, apply more, tap more, wait a few days, and work on it again.

For your headset, I doubt a rubber strap wrench will work. Find the proper sized headset wrench - they're not very expensive. Park tools is a great source.

The blue Ochsners were Aelle tubes. The red ones and the handful of chrome frames were SL. Still show up regularly around Chicago. Othon was Swiss pursuit champion 1919. I can't remember if they were Bilatto or Biemmezeta. They did them right for Othon because he was Othon.

Thanks much for that piece of info. Rebuilding my Ochsner has entered a stall phase. I have decided to cold set the rear spacing to 130 mm and have purchased a set of Ultegra/Mavic 8/9 speed wheels from a member of BF, Brian3069. He had them posted in C & V sales. The originak wheels were shot and not worth rebuilding. I am also waiting on Shimano 8 spd downtube shifters. I thought about going with 9 speed brifters but I have no problem with the DT shifters, plus it keeps it closer to period correct.

Delbiker and Bianchi girl,

I got to work on my own bike today! What a pleasure. Finally getting some restoration done on the seven bikes caught in an arson event. The frame paint was from Pro Kote Indy (some hot rodders I found in the racing world). Decals were from Greg Softley in Australia. I was able to replace BB and headset with vintage campy, and will restore the triple t stem and bars tomorrow. Most of it came through OK, but the wheels will need complete rebuild.
For some reason heat and anodized aluminum don't mix well. I found a source for the white Bennotto tape we used back then in Mexico. A bit costly but it will make the restoration complete. Pics so far.... MH

Looking good! The paint job looks great.Did you buy the paint and do it yourself? When I rebuilt mine I got the decals from velocal.com. Keep us updated as it moves forward. Thanks.

30 years ago I painted them myself, but the two part epoxy paints got me off the paint it myself wagon. The guys I am using are powder coat specialists. I found them on the north side of Indy about five miles north of Georgetown road, on 86th street. They started the place because they couldn't get a decent paint job for their hot rods. They now do exotic coatings that cover even the inner walls of engine blocks to keep the oils moving faster and run cooler. They dip, blast, and coat everything and they do a great job. I decal and then clear coat here after they do their magic. I am picking up some steam on the re-builds but keep finding little things I hadn't planned on. Today's surprise was that I need to find the nylon washers for the brake levers for both Campy and Superbe pro levers.
I will start the build on the Patelli next. The frame paint is Italian and the fork was done here by my guys, so there is a slight mis-match in bright sunlight, but it will still be better than the burnt paint from the fires. Smiles, MH

I have decided to sell off the 59 cm frame and fork as a complete bike. After all this time posting it here and offering it for trade in doesn't fit postings, it is looking for new home. I am fitting it with 105 first generation parts with upgraded tri--color wheels (on Weinmann new LP18 rims) and rear derailleur. The bars and stem are newer Trek style with cork tape, and the seat post and seat are non-descript items, but still good stock. Crank and FD are 105 (but because it is a new old style set of bio pace rings I am changing them out for a set of 50/39 round which will make the gearing a bit easier). I will sell the bike with the rings and small bits as extras with it. If you have any buddies who might want a taller bike you might let them know about this one. I trust all is well, Smiles, MH

Thanks MH, good luck with the sale. I will keep it in mind if I hear or know of anyone looking. I am well and have been working on a Fuji Ace frame that was given to me by a BF member. I have built it up with 9 speed/triple Sora components from a small, cheap, used bike I acquired. I like the frame, it has room for much wider tires than I was anticipating. I got in a short ride on it this afternoon. Not all that thrilled with the Sora components but they will be ok. I really dislike the brakes, promax calipers. How far is Bloomington from Indianapolis? I have a brother and his family there.

Bloomington is 60 miles south of Indy on I-69. It takes about an hour to make the trip. But I have done it more than a few times to get to Pro-Kote Indy who does my powder coating. Lemme know if yer gonna be in Indy sometime. Smiles, MH

Thought to pipe in of some research.

The all chrome Ochsner is a complete different frame vs. the 'red' and 'blue' offerings. From what I gather is most elusive and made by Cinelli, Columbus SL tubed.

The 'red' frameset is Columbus SL tubing and the 'blue' Columbus Aelle, both made in Switzerland by Royal. These trickled in, starting around 1982. No numbers to verify volume but comparatively speaking, very low

Royal Cycles had no presence in the States but did in Europe. The 'blue' framesets, off the rack were Columbus SL and called Super Record (unlike importer Ochsner's blue frameset, Aelle tubed). Utility tool, racing machine.

In 1982, Wrangler apparel / jeans sponsored a Swiss cycling team for only one year. Royal - Wrangler - Campagnolo. The following season the team was Royal - Oliver Tex. The rider kit had slight variance during its brief era and also noted graphics / permitted livery on frame. I'm wondering if corp Wrangler said enough of this euro bikey thing and rather poured dollars toward NASCAR / Dale Earnhardt Sr.. In 1983, the team was Royal - Magniflex.

It is interesting that on the chrome one pictured here earlier, those Cinnelli guys put the seat tube decal on upside down. They must been having some good fun with the cycling public back then! Smiles, MH

Here's another Swiss made Royal Super Record in blue paint with chrome fork and Campy ends. This one has the Royal logo pantograph fork crown. Columbus SL tubing, not Aelle.

Maker of Ochsner of which the 'red' frames were of Columbus SL.

Also note the same logo perimeter design and font of marque.

When you say "funky star nut", do you really mean slotted lock ring?


Typically, one uses a lockring tool/spanner. Hozan makes them. Park Tool makes them. If you have a 1911 bushing tool, it might have a pin spanner end. Or some AR-15 multi tools.

I have an Ochsner too

Hello Forum Members:

Wish I could send a picture of my bike, but need 29 more posts (to the forum) before that can happen.

I bought my Ochsner in 1997, in Bloomington IN (when I was a student at IU Bloomington). It is a great Road Bike. It has Campagnolo made Dropouts on frame for Rear and Fork dropout(s), respectively. The frame sets up nicely for my Campagnolo Nuovo Record Crankset and Rear Derailleur.

Anybody know what model Campagnolo Cassette I should buy ?? I have Campagnolo Campagnolo Nuovo Record Hubs, I think. I want to replace the existing Cassette (which in not made by Campagnolo). Please help! Thanks! KC

If you bought it in Bloomington, while at IU, you likely bought it at BikeSmiths as a frame set. I think that shop had about three of them brought in. That is where I bought mine. The campy group you have is compatible with almost all six speed free wheels and it need not be an original Campy freewheel. Campy at that time was making a titanium ringed freewheel that was was costly. I use the Suntour winner and new winner spaced at ultra six spacing. With a Record / N. record crank set the Suntour and Shimano freewheels work quite well. HTH, MH

WOW You really know your B TOWN history !! I bought the candy apple red Ochsner it was hanging in the front window of BikeSmiths (the shiny Campagnolo dropouts caught my eye, I think I paid $99.00 for the frame). So are you saying that you bought your Ochsner frame in the same timeframe (1997ish) ? If so, that is RAD

Question: so you are suggesting that I should go with Shimano freewheel in lieu of Campagnolo freewheel ? What is benefit of going with Shimano ? Just curious.

Note: on my existing freewheel I can't use the Top Gear because it breaks (cracks) the pulley wheels in my Campagnolo rear derailleur

I would recommend changing to a smaller large ring on your freewheel. Sooner or later all of those plastic pulley wheels crack. I'd suggest some aluminium sealed bearing units like those available from Chaser Tech. The basis of a less expensive freewheel is going to be availability. HTH, MH

let's not forget Othan's brother ( someone has to do the books) after all the
company name was Ochsner and Ochsner. our shop bought Campy parts from
them in the 70s. there was a surprise in every box; sometimes a chocolate bar
sometimes a paperback cookbook. in the 70s catalogs the frames were Swiss made.
