Vintage Campy tools - thanks Uncle Arthur!

My uncle passed away last week, but along with the '77 Cinelli, and '79 Dave Moulton Paris Sport frames he had given me last year, he also left me this nice old tool set in a leather satchel. I am guessing the strange tool on the bottom is a brake holder? The Campy stuff is about 40 years old or so. Neat, huh?

Do his memory proud--wrench away! Great family tradition you've got going there.

Are you referring to this one?

If so, that's a third-hand tool for holding the brake caliper closed while installing the cable. IMO, the best such tool made.

Do you mean the Var 02? Yes, it is a 'third hand tool'.

yes, it holds the brake pads just off the rims letting you tighten the brake cable at that setting.
Late!

Thanks. My uncle did have great taste, expensive taste. He always wanted the best things. I definitely got that gene!
Are VAR tools good? I've never heard of them. And the brake tool will come in handy when I finally finish the Paris sport build.

Yes, they are. VAR is probably the premier provider of bike tools, and has been in the business far longer than e.g. Park Tool. They're still in business, but mostly distributed in Europe in recent years. I think they have some market-sharing and/or cross licensing arrangement with Park, as many VAR and Park tools have uncanny resemblance to each other:

Beautiful tools, they are a great memory maker for you, I am sure. Your Uncle sounds like a good man that loved fine bicycles and cared for them properly. Display them with pride, maybe a nice hardwood glass top presentation box in your uncle's memory.

Good idea, although I have no room for a glass presentation case, and, plan on using the tools for my vintage bikes. I remember my uncle pulling out the leather satchel to work on his bikes - so the tools in the leather satchel is a nice reminder for me - along with the two bikes that I will ride.
