Talk me off the ledge, Schwinn Peloton

I came across what looks like an early 80's Peloton (6 speed DT, aero brake cables). Seller is a re-seller of various sporting goods & such. He knows bikes but doesn't get into road bikes He's asking $300, selling for a friend.
I've only seen a couple of pictures so far, looks to be in good shape. He says it's stock, but it has a dura-ace RD, I think the crank too, not SunTour Superbe (either is great by me).
My one reservation so far is, it has tubular Araya wheels. I'm no stranger to tubbies, but I swore off them 9 years ago after too many flats on Vittoria Rallyes.

It seems like a cool bike at a decent price, but I figure I either need to find a clincher wheel set or invest in some better tubulars.
I'm intending to use it for lunch hour rides around my workplace, the roads are not too bad, and pretty flat. I just don't want to have to do the Walk of Shame back to the office!

Don't do it. Simple. You're welcome.

Now get real. You come here asking to be talked out of getting a bike?

I have an 85, full Suntour setup and the Araya tubulars. I did have a walk-home early in the game when I tried to use old tires with an even older one as a spare - had a flat and managed to explode the spare. Fun!! That said, I've been using (new) tubs since then and have had no issues, the one leak I had I cured on the road with Stan's NoTubes and didn't have to change tires. Still riding on that same set, sealed tire and all.

Oh, regarding the ledge. Jump. Buy the bike.

Find a taller ledge and then JUMP! I have had mine since the 80's. It was in an arson fire, and it is just now back from the powder coating shop. The original Suntour kit was heavily damaged and it will get a Campy NR treatment after the decal set and clear coating. Smiles, MH

Point of order: you didn't spell it "Peleton," as do 90% of everyone who posts here, so by law you are required to buy it.

(And for G_d's sake, never buy Vittoria Ralley tires again - no wonder you have a dim view of tubies!)

I have a ‘85 Peloton and LOVE it. It is a large frame, but the SP downtube helps reduce flex. I have a same size bike in Tange 1, and it seems to flex more. The Schwinn rides great. Previous owner swapped my RD and shifters for Shimano 600... I really like the Superbe seatpost and crankset. I prefer the Royal Gran Comp to AGC since brake pads will be easier to replace.
Mine is 13-21 freewheel, so I avoid the hills on this one. This should be a great bike for your lunch time rides! Beautiful red paint, made in Japan quality, Cinelli bars/stem, and Columbus tubes, can’t go wrong.

Thanks in part to you enablers, I went ahead and bought the Peloton. Seller came down in price without me asking, and it's in pretty rideable shape.
I gave it the once over, changed out the saddle and pedals, and took it out for 15 miles yesterday. It's got that classic steel race bike ride quality- nimble, lively road feel but not buzzy or harsh. I'm getting re-aquainted with DT shifters, and I could have used a couple more gears in places, but the indexed Dura-Ace shifting was solid and precise.
I'll post a pic after I change out the bars and tires!

In this market I am glad you were able to get them to come down in price, although I still see people post Motobecane Mirages for $300 on CL (SMH) the market seem to be soft right now. Cool that you had a good shakedown ride but please hurry up with the pics- we are an inpatient bunch

So after posting this pic I got a question from a member asking about the powder coat supplier. But alas I have lost the message! So to the person who asked about this finish: I was at Pro Kote Indy today and Dawn gave me this supplier.

It was me. Thanks for the source info! Gorgeous color.
I was actually looking for the name of that particular powder. Looks like their Lollypop red?

Hudson,
On the color board at PK Indy it is listed as prismatic cherry. It is a bit deeper in color, like the new Mustangs. It has the sparkles looking like they are floating in the color unlike the old metal flake base coat, with a colored clear over it. Here is a shot of the blueberry from the same supplier. Smiles, MH

Picture!

It took me a little while to do my updates & take a pic. New, wider Daedo bars, NOS DiaCompe hoods, ITM tape, new brake cables & housing. Replaced the seatpost & Selle San Marco saddle, Crank Bros pedals (red!). New Tufo 26mm tubulars & tape- hardest part was cleaning off the old glue.
This pic is half way through a 21 mile ride yesterday, I have about 40 miles on it altogether. Back in the day when it was new, I would have made fun of Schwinns, not knowing any better. This bike rides great!

That looks great. I’m a big fan of the 80’s Schwinns with five in the stable.

I believe Velocals sells partial decal kits if you wanted to replace the seat tube decals.
