Rims: without holes

While looking through the site today I clicked on an ad for BlackMax bicycles. Amongst the specs for one of the products was that entry. I don’t get it, rims connect to hubs don’t they? What am I missing?

https://blackmaxbike.com/products/sa...0b638108&_ss=r

regards

Some wide rims (bmx and fat bikes) have lightening holes between the spoke holes.

A rim needs to have at least one hole.

Why?

You can use Tannus flat free tires without the need for a valve hole.

My guess is those 20" FAT tire rims don't have the Swiss Cheese holes to make them marginally lighter, but otherwise are standard single-wall rims with spoke holes.

There are a few rims without through holes (except for the valve above) to allow tubeless tires without rim tape. A few different ways to do that. Shimano uses threaded inner holes and no outer holes on their Ultegra and Dura Ace wheels.

Some brands simply have inner holes, and fish the nipples through with magnetes.

Zipp makes spokeless wheels (or monospoke wheels if you wish).

Yep, this. E bike so no need to lighten the rims and no holes to allow light to degrade the rim tape.

There's a big hole going through the whole thing.

When it comes to the wheel, that's a hole in the whole, not in the rim.

No real point, I just wanted an excuse to write "hole in the whole.".

Okay, two minutes ago I didn't know and didn't care. Now I'm upset and it's your fault. I think that you should have to buy one of those things, figure it out, and report back to us. This never would have come up if you hadn't posted it.

"Rims Without Holes" is actually the title of a self-help book. The notion is that we believe we are flawless and self-sustained, we will win the lottery or something.

My hunch, my hope, is that it's just a poorly-translated reference to the above, since the bike obviously has pneumatic tires and spokes.

But that mirrored picture of the white bike is really bugging me. Why??

So, each rim has ONE valve hole, and only ONE valve hole.

The holes for the nipples are only in one wall of the rim.

You put each nipple through the valve hole, fish them to a nipple hole, and then proceed building the wheel from there as usual.

In exchange for this pain, no rim tape required.

(No more confusing than clippless pedals.)

That nipple insertion process sounds like an interesting way to pass an entire afternoon.

Not anywhere close to as interesting as the extraction process if you break a spoke.

So I thought I would ask the question on that web site. Got nowhere. Including a 404 when submitting a query. I hereby apologize for all the time and energy wasted by bringing up this issue.

Eons ago when I was a kid, I remember blank rims at the LBS. The mechanic punched the desired number of holes on them with a special machine.

Apology not accepted--making crap explanations up has been way too much fun for you to need to apologize.
