Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ride Time vs Overhead Time

Total your time buying bike/s and kit and nutrition and time pumping tires, cleaning bike, washing kit/s, doing mechanical stuff, driving to location, driving to mechanic - total bike prep time (Bikeforums.net does not count - unless required to make your bike go. ).
This is your ALL-IN bike recreation/sport time - less the time on the bike.

Then divide by total time going forward in the saddle on that bike.

What is it?

When I used to ride utility - commute, I pumped tires once a week, I wore smelly stuff and cleaned up. Maybe it was 20%.
Now...much bikes, latex tires pumped every ride, I like fresh stuff, we drive to places to ride and I don't ride as long. Maybe 60%.

Wouldn’t a way better question be “How many matching socks do you own?”

This "poll" is ****ed up.

I ride about 15 hours per week, and spend most of the rest of the week wishing I was riding.

You do the math.

I suppose this should include time changing into and out of kit, showering, complaining about leg soreness, beer and discussion before and after group rides, gym workouts to support biking habit and associated driving and clothes changing? Oh - then there's planning the group's rides, posting the rides with directions, replying to people who either can or can't make it.

Can this also include indoor riding? There's where one really saves the prep time.

Relax. It’s all part of the journey and be glad you don’t own a boat.

I think just getting older requires more time to do anything. Can I get a 10% time discount for being over 55?

I only buy Sock Guy black 3" cuff socks from Competitive Cyclist so they all match.

I don't buy new bikes.

I order shorts from Voler and socks from Competitive Cyclist with a mouse click.

Jerseys and jackets don't wear out, and tights take a while to get fuzzy.

I order peanut butter crunch Clif bar 18 packs from Amazon with a mouse click.

I inflate my tires on Mondays to about 80 and 90 psi, so they're still above 70 and 80 on my final Saturday ride.

I spend a few seconds brushing off the dried mud before indoor VO2max Mondays following weeks I rode in the rain.

I throw six days of riding clothes in the wash with seven days of street clothes once a week for 0 net cost, although it takes a few minutes to hang everything up to dry in the hopes of longer life to defer the day I find a company changed the fit of what I wear.

I replace right shift cables and housing every 2000 miles. I replace chains every 4500. I throw out my rear tire every 4500, move the front back, and install a new tire. I replace PowerTap batteries every three months. Other parts are very long lived.

I add lubrication when my chain no longer runs silently, after potentially 1000 miles on a new chain and 100 if I got rained on too much one week.

I don't drive to mechanics or rides.

It all rounds to not much per hour riding.

Traffic lights are my biggest time sink.

Definition of a boat: " a hole in the water that you continually pour money into".

Cheers

~6hrs/wk ride time
1 hr getting ready
.25 hr bike repair/maintenance- 1 hr/month
1 hr shop for better or best (thing)
.5 hr Strava/pics upload
So realistically over 50% not counting BF,
which gets it close to 100%
