Trek Bike Advice (Craigslist)

Hi guys!

I need a bike to get around my college town. I don't know much at all about bikes, so I was wondering what you all think about these bikes! They seem to be good deals, but, again, I don't know much!

Thanks in advance,
Andrew

Both look pretty good. The 930 is probably the better deal but better suited for off-road use. The 750 would be a great choice for commuting. Make sure whatever you get fits you as a good deal on the wrong sized bike isn't a good deal.

The 750 should be a very good bike for you. Be sure that it fits properly. I use an 830 for my good-weather commuter. Add a rack and fenders and you'll be all set. Take it for a test ride when you look at it. There shouldn't be any chain skip or erratic shifting. If there is, you might want to consider negotiating on price so the seller pays for a tune-up. The Treks are very decent and comfortable bikes.

I agree with the others, the 750 is the better choice. Those shifters are notorious for gumming up over the years, but they can usually be brought back around with a heavy dose of Pb'laster or WD-40, followed by a few drops of oil. I have a feeling the guy selling the 930 may not have taken great care of it, judging by his method of posing it for the photos. "Dang, dropped it on the derailleur again!"

Yes, go with the 750. If for no other reason, it has a reliable steel fork. Stay away from any bike that has that accordion plastic crap on the suspension fork. It will break the first time you go off a sidewalk.

In either case you should have a knowledgeable person go with you to check them out. A used bike can have so many mechanical problems yet still look pretty. Although I like MTBs for general duty I would probably lean towards the 750 because it has a solid fork yet unlike a lot of road oriented bikes, has cantilever brakes which I think perform better than a lot of caliper brakes as fitted to most road bikes.

I'll just say that the 750 looks well used and might be pretty well beat. Maybe its fine, but there are some signs it might need alot to see significant further use. You can't tell to much from the 930 and that might not be the actual photo of the bike. At those prices for bikes of that age be careful. Both are great bikes I just would hate for them to end up being money pits for ya.

I'll add on to the votes for the 750.

I've got an '96 820 multitrack that is very similar to that 750. I put some fat slicks on it, and it is now an amazing commuter/ utility bike. She's super comfortable, and hauls a heck of a load on the rack without any problems.
