Have you ever had your saddle bag or handle bar bag stolen?

If so, what's your story? Did it happen fast? Was it preventable?

I have been in the bike shop and had someone come in and report that issue .. taken out of her truck cab.

Bar bag hack I did it was bolted on.. the debit card and passport in a money-belt under my clothing..

Saddle bag. Don’t know if it happened fast or slowly. Bike was locked outside my office. Forgot to remove the bag.

Why do you ask?

I've misplaced a small one, but that's as far as losing one goes. Found it the same day, right where I put it.

Always in the last place to look.

Once, I parked my bike outside my kids' high school for an event. When I came back out, the contents of my saddle bag were strewn on the sidewalk. I picked them up and they were all there.

I'm assuming someone was bored, or looking for something that they didn't find.

It's literally the only time in my life that anybody has messed with one of my bikes.

If there's nothing of value for them or if you locked it up well, the perp will damage it all just for s&gas. Thats what it's like locally.

One of each. A small saddle bag of basic tools and a tube; and a mid-sized bar bag that had just a few oddments in it.

Those two bags, a saddle+post (Q/R), and one bike. Across 50yrs of riding. Not bad, all things considered.

Nope, but my handlebar bag stays with me on tour. I trust my spidey sense. If I think "I wonder if stuff is secure", that's saying"it ain't"

Yep.

But it was on my commuter, so there was nothing particularly valuable in there. Between the bag and the contents I was out about $50.

I just chalk it up to the cost of convenience. I’m not going to take it on and off every time I go into a store or work.

Not to me, but I still remember a guy in college who had his brand new Cannondale stolen, with a brand new saddle bag with a brand new 1/4 oz of greens in it. I still feel bad for him.

I have had my saddle bag open during a ride and dump everything, never to be found again; does that count?

I carry all the important stuff inside my backpack and inside my pockets, so that way it's always with me. I would never ever leave any important items on my bike when locking it outside.

I had a trunk bag fall off my rear bicycle rack on a downhill. A fellow in a van picked it up. I figured he'd give it to me at the bottom of the hill. Nope. He kept it. Fortunately the only thing in was an NIV bible. LOL

Cheers

Does it count if they stole the bike too? Lost some camera accessories. Fortunately I took the camera in with me. Came out the the bike was gone. Several years ago.

Have had people steal lights before.

I kept a handlebar bag on my bike while working abroad and commuting in Munich, and had some items taken out of it once while parked outside briefly.

Bike, no. Was on a motorcycle, Northside Dr, ATL, (1990-ish) and had a ped cross behind me while I waited on a light. Felt a tug on my bike. Holmes had tried to nick my backpack, but it was locked to the backrest.
