What do you think I should pay for this Bottecchia? The seller is the original owner. The frame however is quite rusty. Plan on purchasing in the next day or two. Appreciate the feedback. Thanks

The chrome may clean up ok, the crank is not original but Mavic is nice I would try 250, I would go up a little...all this assumes no damage check the tubes for any bulges around the head tube
Point out the cost to get it running, tires cables as well as how bad the rust is.
The owner may think that is lowball so be prepared.

Hey thanks for that info. I offered $280 and it got denied. Then went up to $305 and he counted with $375. Shipping is free however so I would take shipping is at least about $75.

OP,
Since it is a local pickup you still might have a chance.....as I said what the ask id always different from the sale price. Even though it was once a very nice bike it will need a lot of work and money to get it back in a conc=dition that is rideable.
There will be others out there and as I said at the end of the 3 day period you could see what the price will be, eBay and PP fee would deduct at least 40.00 off of the asking price
....a quarter of the 400 in my estimation was not a good counter.

Too bad the owner "upgraded" the crank. I have a Limongi with the same Mavic components and the starfish crank is beautiful

Hey appreciate pointing out all the details. I agree that this bike will require quite a bit of work. He is in seaside so pick up would not work for me. I did ask about the condition of the tires and possibly if he has the stock crank and bottom bracket. Waiting on reply. Will counter offer once I get the info. I had forgotten about the tax that Ebay now adds so you're right, the will be more than what he countered with. if he doesn't go lower, I may as well just wait it out. Thanks

Agree. I reached out to the owner to see if he has the original cranks. If he does not, then I'd probably go from there for the price. Thanks

That bike looks rough. If the chrome is that bad, imagine the inside of the bb shell.

I don’t see that chrome cleaning up well. You’ve already offered more than I would value it.

Yep, personally I think I'd pass. Hard to tell how bad things are inside the frame without tearing it down and taking a look. I normally pass on any bikes I want that have rust from a coastal area. Too many nice ones that don't and to me a structurally sound frame is critical.

I agree with the others. I'd pass on this bike at the current price. The bike has real issues that you can see from the pictures and quite likely to have even more issues once you take this bike apart.

Thank you all for the feedback. I am going to pass on the bike based on the recommendation for the current price. Upon closer look of the pics, the rust seems quite heavy on the rear stays. As some of you have mentioned could potentially impact the integrity of the bike.

...an excellent example of the money pit project bike. As stated, that would be a great project bike if you were a paint nerd like me, had a lot of time to invest in it, and maybe had your own collection of older components out in boxes in the garage to bring it back to some semblance of what it was. You'd still have to paint over all the chrome, but that's not a big deal if you are painting it anyway.

If you do enough projects like this, you quickly realize you will be underwater on them forever. You just don't want to start out $375 underwater.

Wow. That's a little crusty. I don't know if I've got enough elbow grease left in my arms to clean something like that up. Sorry, no way I would pay $400 for that. Be good. Have fun.

Seaside, California is right next to the ocean and is very prone to a strong wind from the west that blows the salt spray onto anything left outdoors. There is a very good chance that the rust is more than skin deep on that bike. I wouldn't buy it for any more than the components are worth to you.

After seeing how crusty it was, I passed. If were in better condition I would have bought it.

I agree and I was going to pick it up but after guidance from forum members, I skipped. too much work and cost associated with bringing that frame to its original state.
