I agree, in this case neither was operating at high speed.

Our habits on the road are the result of our values: We value speed and convenience over life and limb. We operate in line with our values and our children absorb our values and habits.

It isn’t necessarily as complicated as that.

Habits are also the result of what you learn and what you practice. Many people don’t see driving or cycling as something that requires skill.

A lot of people don’t know how to look. They just lock their heads forward.

It’s possible both parties saw an empty parking lot and didn’t see the need to look because they expected no one was there.
