modern bikes just don't define bike for me.
If I was in competition, it might be different.
Even if I bought a new bike, you'd think it was an old bike.

The Surly CC gets tons of use, the Randonee doesn't get as much use as I'd like.

I like the Calfee -- kinda like my Trek in that it is another carbon bike that is old enough to somewhat start to bridge the gap to C&V yet still run like the most modern hot rods!
The MAcalu has an understated elegance reminiscent of a Merlin (probably the look they were going for)

To OP your choice of words make me uncomfortable.
In the spirit of your intent; The words coyote u%$* come to mind, also walk of shame and finally, no one will ever find out about this.

I had to have cream panels on DT & ST with matching HT and LUGS.
The compact crankset, 10 cogs, 1 1/8 steerer, full carbon fork, flat ramp out to Ergo made it modern for me.

Big bump here, obviously was asleep at the switch. Holy crap, so freakin cool! As an aside at the gathering at VeloCult last weekend there was a DiNucci, 2 Merz's and Strawberry in the house, 1 of the Merz's and the Dinucci live there but with my Merz and the Strawberry it made for quite a triad you won't often see. How about more ride report? Plz.
So I lucked into a Specialized Allez 40th Anniv. Ltd. Ed. frameset, designed by Mark DiNucci, built by Toyo. There's lotsa stuff about these online, basically Nooch started with a clean sheet of paper and let Spec'l pay for the tooling, lugs, tubes and fittings to build his vision of the best steel frame possible with today's technology. These were a limited edition of only 74 frames, but Mark got to keep the tooling, so he can build you a custom version even nicer.
I've barely got 50mi on it so far, but it does ride very nicely. I was doing some climbing on a club ride and the rear wheel just felt planted.
I had trouble getting the color right and fighting reflections outdoors, and I gotta whip the house into shape before the missus comes home from a biz trip, so the flickr album is a little abbreviated for the moment.

Ok, I've seen the modern bike I want.
You can log on to Raleigh's corporate website and buy there, the prices are slashed. See this thread:
https://www.bikeforums.net/general-cy...-bicycles.html
They have the Grand Vittesse for $1499.99. Reynolds 853, Ultegra, Clement Strada 28c's. 11-32 w/ long cage derailleur. Jensen has the same bike on sale for $500 more.

Agreed, gotta give em credit for trying and IMHO silver Ultegra with a 5 spoke crank would go a long way to making it right.

Yep. I think so too. Strangely I think the all carbon retro Raleigh clubman works better. This one would be nice with a steel fork and a crank that isn't fat/hollow/painted.

They have the Grand Prix with Veloce for $1379 and it's actually a break away frame. Reynolds 520 with steel fork. It even comes with a travel bag.

The break away frame is a really sweet option, but it puts the price too far beyond what I think is reasonable.
The Record Ace, with Reynolds 631 tubing, looks like the best of the Heritage line to me.
Still, something doesn't look quite right about the fork -- to narrow at the crown. It also kind of needs a quill stem. Of course, as I refine what I'd like to see more and more it becomes clear to me that I'm "designing" one of the bikes from the retro roadies thread.

My modern bike... I still insist on toe-clips/straps and a brooks saddle though.

I forgot that since starting this thread I actually built up another fairly modern bike. Unfortunately I havent had much chance to ride it yet though.
it needs black campy skeleton brake calipers and a record carbon caged rear mech.

Don't have a ton of interest in getting a new bike but if I did, it would be the below. Riding buddy has one, it's a wonderful ride.
Granted, some of the bikes being pumped out by different companies with 1x drive trains and advertised as adventure bikes interest me. It's just not the type of riding I generally do right now. That Cannondale hits everything I'd want in a new bike.

Our local Shimano rep has one of these painted in the Gulf team colors.
Really attractive bikes!!!
Also, I dig these new additions to the thread. Toavii hit the nail on the head with the Cannondale choice.I see a lot of the junior racers on these. lots of bang for the $$$$.

Effective short course race machinery at a price that wouldnt make you cry too much if you damaged it in a pile up
The stuff i like to ride today are the type of rides you only saw under sponsored riders or well heeled vet class guys. The average cat 3 rode C'Dales, Specialized, Giants- typically with either 105 or tri color components
Nowadays, everyone is a superstar in their own minds though- even the cat 5 class at our local Tuesday night worlds is full of $6500 bikes with Di2 and Enve wheels
Its good for the industry though-- somebody out there has gotta buy the new stuff

Is that the Litespeed Classic in sig line???
Must have been the largest frame - 61 or 63cm, maybe.
Before all the shaped tubing craze, altho this looks OverSized, not too early. Hhmmn.
Being a TN boy, I followed the unusual framesets out of Litespeed. Merlin was a dream, never owned either. yet.

The Age is also quite droolworthy in the black finish, but I would want to see all of that beautiful fillet brazing.
I also think the Potenza groupset looks fantastic on these bikes.
