Well it worked last nights ride.
Rode pretty hard to, Tore the living crap out of the insides of my left shoulder, pretty painful today.
It's fixed for now, and hopefully for a while.
No, I wasnt dumb enough to leave the water in the bearings.
Yes I soaked in alcohol.
Yes I ran some Wd-40 into it to remove all the water.
the hot sun also helped get rid of water.

and for the record, the preload adjustment doesn't work very well. I get it nice a firm, and then.... CLICK, it drops to soft.

Ya know Cheeto...I'm glad you're steering okay now but I think your headset is installed improperly.

Under your lower cup...there's a larger space than normal. Someone from your other thread brought this up already. Are you sure you don't have the upper wedge thingy on the underside? It looks like there's something on top of your crown race between the race and bearing. There shouldn't be.

Obviously... you said as much. The problem with water isn't always the water. It's what water leaves behind after it dries. For a bearing like that I wouldn't use water at all, and if I was forced to use water I'd go out and buy a replacement to have on hand for the day when I need to replace it. If you used WD40 to get the water out you may be fine. You might not be as well, and only time will tell.

No biggie though, all this stuff is fixable or replaceable. Just ride it until it don't ride no more, fix it, and repeat. I think you've got the first part of that process down and are making progress on the second part. A word of advice (something I learned myself): never underestimate your own ignorance.

probably because it's an old fork. maybe very clapped out. maybe just needs a decent service.

I think he may of put two crown races on. Im going to take it apart yet again and double check EVERYTHING and piece it together and make sure everything fits nicely.
It's steering again, but it did come loose yesterday, same with my left crank arm!
bikes falling apart around me. Going tomorrow for a new 1x8 crank.
I'm dreading the fork service thing, I don't really know what to do when it comes to forks, I've never had to take one apart.

When you say that you cleaned the "sealed" bearing, you just cleaned the outside right? I think they are sealed for a reason.

its not 100% sealed like the person said above. I can see the bearings through a very tiny gap. They're just in a casing, and then when you put the race on, it has a rubber seal that covers the very very small gap.

I think there's already a crown on the fork, but it wont come off.

it's stuck!
does this look normal? I looked at other forks and they didnt have it, it seems to not want to come off

OK AFTER A FEW MINUTES LOOKING AT MY OLD SUNTOUR, AND THEN MY MANITOU, the suntour has a notch just big enough for a screw driver, stick it in there and pry up the crown race pops up.
The manitou doesnt have one of these. So after about 15 minutes of carefully poking and proding with random thin tools and a few taps of a rubber mallot, and a chunk of skin missing off my finger the old race came of.
It was a little rusted on to, so I cleaned up all around the area, and slide the Cane creek crown race (looks exactly like the one pictured above! thanks for that, same color and everything) down onto the steer tube down to the crown. Assembled it all backtogether paying close attention to the bearings and stuff, and now it's all together correctly, its all fitting good, no wobble, no stiffness, no gap, its perfect!

IT'S FINALLY FIXED!!!!!!!

Guess I owe some of you some appologies, and some of you some thanks.

I should of read up a little more, and payed closer attention, at first I didn't know what the difference was between the two races, tonight, at like 10:45, it finally hit me. It has got to come off. SO thank you everyone for your help and critques. My headset is now properly installed.

Next thing on my list is the... fork =)

11:00 at night, and I have to get up at 6:00am.... and Im working on a bike LOL.

The fork is still better then the Suntour, I just need the preload adjustment to stop slipping. I just don't want to take the think apart.
Im not even sure it's an 01 yet LOL.
but it's been in his garage for approx 4 years he said. so that makes it atleast an 04.

im just glad that's out of the way now.
tomorrow I'll get that crank ordered, and soon i should be ready for the race in august.

65-100 bucks.
the GOOD mechanic at the LBS, he went to school for bikes lol. He's an amazing biker as well.
He's one guy we can all count on around here as far as bikes go.
we had one picked out, had bashguard and jump guard on it I think, removable/changable chainring, and the crankarms were ok.
Don't know what company, he was trying to run the shop, fix a bike, and answer phones the whole time I was there lol.

I wont be getting any more free stuff for a while, lol I've run out of very generous people=)

To add to the success, I got my crank, We decided to go the cheaper route, he gave me a Shimano 3 ring crankset for 40.00. I removed the granny gear, and I have to keep the Large chain ring on for a spacer for the bolts for now. Eventually I'll get a bash gaurd to replace it. I orderd this chain guide thing, LBS said he uses one and it works great.
Guess it goes where the FD used to go, and it keeps the chain down on the ring.
for 10.00 I'll give it a whirl.


Installed crank, and it works nicely.
But, My method of removing the old crankset was a bit out of the box lol. I don't have a crank puller or anything, so, I got my hammer out..... I'll take a picture of the old crank later lol.......

I'd place the fork somewhere around 98-01. I would be very surprised if it was a 2004.

the bolts that hold the chainring on, they are a tad to long for just one crank. I dont have any washers small enough, so the big chain ring stays on to take up the slack on the bolts.
