What to bring on a 70 mile charity event?

Hi all, i'm doing my first ever cycling event this weekend.

Its 70 miles, with a rest stop every 15 miles that has SAG support, snacks, restrooms, drinks, etc.

My buddy was planning on bringing a backpack full of tools, tubes, food, everything he could ever need, and I was thinking of not bringing a bag and just relying on the rest stops for food matience and just carrying my water bottles.

I was planning on just wearing my kit, and keeping everything a simple set up. ( i'm riding single speed so i'm not worried about a mechanical failure )

Should I bring more gear like my buddy? or is he over doing it?

I'd bring a single water bottle and enough to fix a flat (SAG vehicles can sometimes take awhile to show up).

yeah, I was thinking maybe bringing a tube, I don't have a compact pump to bring, but I'm not a racer, i'm just doing it just to do it and time really isn't an issue.

I'd just like to be able to complete it, and would be nice to keep a moving pace above 10mph.

The whole point of a supported ride is to not have to carry everything yourself. Just carry water, and anything you need for an emergency- tube, CO2 inflator/pump, phone, etc. The support crew will take care of the rest. Have fun!!!

You and your buddy are traveling too light.
Here's what you need to bring with you.

- One forty-five caliber automatic
- Two boxes of ammunition
- Four days' concentrated emergency rations
- One drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine,
vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills
- One miniature combination Russian phrase book and Bible
- One hundred dollars in rubles
- One hundred dollars in gold
- Nine packs of chewing gum
- One issue of prophylactics
- Three lipsticks
- Three pair of nylon stockings.

Two water bottles because you don't want to wait at the rest stops. Frame pump for unlimited flat repairs. Seat pack with spare tube, patch-kit, tire levers, and wrench for wheel removal. One energy bar per hour of planned riding time in a jersey pocket unless you ride enough you know you'll need less because rest stops run out of tasty food.

This is especially true if it's cool out, in which case stopping will make you cold and you're much better off continuing to pedal.

Two boxes of ammo, no spare magazines, and three lipsticks?

Trained by savages, you were!

POTD, my friend.

I wonder how many people have no idea what you mean. Have a good time in Vegas!

Depends on the conditions. It was Sept in Las Vegas and definitely, two bottles and Hammer electrolyte pills, gel, etc. Some riders had flats and had to wait quite a while. The rest stops could have been better. Their drinks were not mixed well and too sweet for my taste.

It sounds like a cycling event, perhaps you should add a bicycle to your list.......

I would show up as prepared as I would be for any other ride, and if I didn't need tools, spare tube, or extra food or water, I would just save it for the next ride.

You'll have slim pickin's trying to decide what else to bring...

Seriously though, stuff to fix a flat, a bottle or two, and maybe a snack or two just in case should do ya fine. Have fun!

Two water bottles - one for fresh rainwater, the other grain alcohol.

Same list as for a Donald Trump rally...evidently.
