Show Your Crimped, Wheat Leaf Or Other Unusual Frame, Colnagos Need Not Apply

We have all seen them but who owns one? A Ghibli? A Moser? A Coicc? What bike do have that uses shaped tubing like crimped/corrugated, that cool wheat leaf I believe it is called, aero, square? At one of the shops I worked at when living in Mass. there was a guy trying to find help importing/selling and Eastern European made square tubed Ti frame. There is some odd stuff out there so dig back deep into your stable and lets see that odd duck. Sorry since crimped tubes along with the Gilco tubes are Colnagos trademark lets exclude them, beside they get way too much attention already.

Well, since I can’t show my Gilco tubed Master. This one is subtle, but the top tube is oval.

Is that engraved in the tubes? That's pretty neat.

I thought this would get at least a few responses. Guys I am the only one with a crimped frame that isn't a Colnago.

Obviously BG, you are an anti Nago-ite! And we in the Colnago tribe have fought this hatred for thousands of years!

Obviously, I am kidding, although a lot of folks love to hate on Colnago. But honestly, they were the big innovators on tubing, paint and geometry, so it makes sense that they would have the biggest numbers by far on crimped tubing. Hard to exclude them.

Nice Cornello though. Don't they have a Colnago connection?

An Anti Nago-nite? Is that like a Anti Den-tite? I don't know about that but I am sometimes time in the 'love to hate them camp'.

Right they were one of the biggest innovators in the shaped tubing market but there are others that use it right?

I am not sure if there is any connection unless they built them for Cornelo.

Glad you caught that!

Another one of the great Kramer-isms. TV was never the same after Seinfeld.

And don't be a hater. Cross over. Colnago's are truly special IMHO.

Another chance to post the unusual. Unidentified pre-war German bike with crimped seat and chain stays. Enigma.

This was my main road ride for a number of years. Really tight geometry. Later in life it became a town bike.

Gilco Tubing

BG,

Gilco crimped tubing wasn't limited to just Colnagos. A number of other top Italian builders used that tubing it when it was popular in the 1990's - early 2000's: Faggin and Tommasini to name a few.

The name GILCO came from Gilberto Colombo the second son of Angelo Colombo founder of A L Columbus. The senior Colombo began producing bicycle tubing in 1919. The company went on to manufacture tubing for aircraft, furniture and more importantly high performance automobiles and race cars. That's where Gilberto came into the picture.

Poorly translated history:
Gilco - WOI Encyclopedia Italia

More info:
https://forums.thepaceline.net/showt...106187&page=34

Forgive my indiscretion but this was my 1987 Master Ibex MTB made of oversize GILCO tubing.

I posted this pic because these MTBs were so rare and it shows the deep indentations in the oversize tubes. The bike rode terrible on or off road. It was too twitchy and handled like a wheelbarrow. Proof that Colnago and Campy should have stayed away from the MTB market.

@clubman Interesting. Is there a seam in that crimp?
@djkashuba that fork is different. I can't thinik of any now but I've seen bikes with just that single crimp running down the tube.
@solidtyres cool Cramerotti. Is that Oria tubing? I think I've only ever seen one in person and that was a 'cross bike I built for a customer.
@verktyg Thanks for all the info.

Great looking bike keep them coming!!

Gijs van Tuyl. Dutch marque, but this frame was most likely a contract build to Andrea Pesenti, aka Lazerman, the fella who brazed the Cinelli Lazer. Still have it!

Doesn’t anyone have a Huffy Aerowind to share?

The best I’ve got is the Colorado Concept tubing on my Serotta.

The downtube and seat tube are tapered.

Looking for help with identification

Hi, I've just found that thread, and maybe you can help me.

I bought this frame but it was already sanded and I can't identify it. The seller told me that it is Oria tubbing, but I am not sure.
The frame looks very interesting, especially with the chromed rear triangle. Any guesses?

That's the best I have. The impression is so feint but I've had so many folks look at it in perfect lighting conditions, magnification, all of it. I think I see Whieler Hawk
One DDR expat thought he perceived a East German town name that I couldn't even find reference to. And no one else sees it. Regardless, the frame's been passed on to a Bavarian Nova Scotian. Lot's German culture here, the best old world sauerkraut, sausage, schnitzel, beer etc.
