Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Glove up?

Hello,

Here is a real simple question. Do you where gloves when you ride ( in any weather)?

I have been riding going on three years now, and have never worn gloves, and was wondering if this would help with my riding overall.

I always wear them. For me, it's a safety and/or warmth thing. It does not make me a better rider, though.

I think I may start with gloves this year, I plan I doing longer rides, and was thinking this may help. Oh I am running 2 mm Fizik bar tape as well.

This really should have been a "HOT TOPIC" and a poll.

I always do, even indoors on the trainer. Helps with the perspiration and grip.

Improves comfort? Check. Wicks perspiration? Check. Can use different pairs for different conditions? Check.
FYI I wear gloves around 90% of my riding time.

So I've used nike running gloves whenever I've been outdoors this year. But come summer, is there a preference between full finger and fingerless gloves?

your palms will thank you even after small indiscretions, such as not unclipping in time.

I made the mistake of buying some gloves with an open portion on the back of the hands and it made a goofy looking oval tan spot on both hands. My wife gave me so much grief for that... I still wore them until the leather cracked.

You should have told your wife that's as good as a cyclist badge and worn it proudly

Still have scars on the palm of one hand and the knuckles of the other from when the fork cracked on my bike resulting in sudden loss of the front wheel almost 40 years ago. Gloves would have helped. I wear them on most rides now just in case there's another crash.

Yes because when you crash a skin graft will not be required.

When did this even become a reasonable question? Maybe when bar tape got so stupid thick. BITD you never saw a serious cyclist without gloves. I prefer to carry my palm padding with me. And the tan spot...that was religiously cultivated. You either believe in the bike and your spouse respects that, or not.

All the time every time. Full finger.

I work medical for bike races. If you saw the hand trauma that is common with bike falls, you would too.

I wear gloves every ride. Whatever is appropriate for the weather. I like the extra comfort the padding provides.

I don't wear any gloves when the temps are over 60F.
For me they're not necessary, I've done 100 mile
charity rides and 120 mile club rides without using them.

crazy not to wear gloves while riding. Liable to have pretty good road rash on the palms at the very least even falling over at low speed.

Not as crazy as riding with no helmet.
