Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So here was our procedure today for seeing appointments.

1. Client and pet pull into the parking lot.
2. Client calls us.
3. Someone goes out and gets the animal
4. Nurse telephones the person out in their car to take a history
5. We examine the patient
6. I call the person and tell them what I found and what I reccomend
7. Front office person calls them to discuss costs
8. We do the thing we recommended
9. Front office calls the owner and collects payment over the phone
10. We bring the animals and medications out to the car and the owner drives away

Yes it’s drive through vet med.

Our vet has instituted a similar procedure.

So my day started with an emergency meeting. How are we going to proceed? Logistics and big picture.

Ok got it.

I call an emergency meeting of my department. Ok team here’s how we’re doing things.

One hour later, I call an emergency meeting. Disregard what I said in the previous emergency meeting, that’s now obsolete. Here’s what we’re doing now.

And so on.

Then San Francisco goes under lockdown. Me, to myself: jeez, I wonder what the definition of “lockdown” is?

It means non-essential personnel can’t go anywhere for the most part, certainly not to work. But I’ve got a doodle with encephalitis in the hospital and a Maltese to unparalyze tomorrow. So: now I wonder what the definition of “essential” is.

Still not 100% sure but it seems like veterinarians and veterinary technicians are “essential” as far as being able to go to work and treat hospitalized patients.

Ok, good to go.

Then I learn that an employee at the practice is sick and has been tested for coronavirus. We are waiting for the test result. If it comes back positive, then what? We are closed for business, that’s what.

I can’t keep up. I am the one who organizes everyone else and says Ok all y’all here’s what we’re doing. Not now. I have no idea what’s going on anymore.

No sanitizer. Tp was flowing out in non-panic amounts. It was actually quite normal in there, save for the lack of sanitizer. I mixed up a trial batch of home made this evening.

Chocolate and raspberries together is a sublime mixture. Dark chocolate, especially. A chocolate raspberry cake, is heaven.

First confirmed case in Yucatan state. A woman returned from Spain, arriving in Cancun, and then drove to Merida. Here we go. Sooner than expected. I was in town today, but no one was about, due to Monday holiday. Great good luck.

I feel bad because I just keep popping in here for little mini-monologues, but it's all so strange.

My wife is a teacher and they extended spring break. A LOT of people in the area are expecting that extension to last indefinitely. They have begun training/figuring out online learning. She teaches high school freshman in Algebra 1 and German (Not at the same time...) so it's a hassle, but it's doable and kids can adapt.

However, we have a precious little girl in 2nd grade. So I'm sure we, two college educated people with steady jobs and the ability to work with remote learning (Especially with her mom at home) can make this work. But there are MANY families who simply can not. For them, life is stressful enough. They are working hard just to make ends meet and the last thing they expected is to somehow keep the money coming in (and who knows how their job is affected by all this) and also sort out care for their child while maintaining some sort of educational routine.

We also have a little boy who is in a home daycare, so that's probably pretty flexible. But until we know about my SIL, we are sitting tight because the husband of the lady who watches our boy has had his share of health scares just in the past year. He would very likely be high on the list to be killed by this virus.

Now in bike related news: the weather is crap and my weekend went to hell. Tomorrow is Tuesday, so I am hoping to get back into my routine of doing the minimal fake miles on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Hopefully the weekend is nicer. Lord knows nothing else will be going on.

I have yet to crack open the ultrasonic cleaner. I even bought the special pliers for the quick link. Everything is ready to rock. I just need to pick up some wax at the LBS. Should be fun. Question: do I need a dedicated crock pot, or is it possible to clean the wax out afterwards? We have one but basically never use it. My go to is the grill or the cast iron pan on the stove.

My event that I was "training" for got pushed to August in conjunction with the new date for the NAHBS as I had mentioned. They were still going to run something somewhere on the 21st, but with all the CDC recommendations on large gatherings, etc. even breaking the start up into smaller groups just wasn't going to work, so they cancelled it. Oh well.

Plus I don’t know what happens financially if we shut down. Vet med does not operate on huge margins and the basic construct is: you don’t work, you don’t get paid. Maybe there’s some mitigation of that because we’re owned by a big corporation now. So I feel like I can’t address the possibility that we will be shut down if we get one corona positive person, without being able to say what will happen to people financially. Yet it seems deceptive not to say anything.

Theyre working on this furiously at the levels above my pay grade, closed door meetings and conference calls. Can they afford to pay people, yes or no? They need to decide pretty quickly. Personally I think corporate has to find a way to do something or those employees will be lost forever to them and it will be hard for the corporation and it’s individual practices to bounce back.

So I say a lot of “I don’t know” these days. Also: “Here’s what I do know” but that’s really not too much.

RANT WARNING!!! Proceed at your own risk!

I'm I the only one that has a problem with people not following social distancing protocols. WTF people, look around you!! Do you want to be part of the "next Italy"! The longer people think that Americans have some sort of "miraculous immunity" the worse things are going to be. Is it fun, **** no, is necessary, absolutely! Suck it up buttercups, or we're all going to suffer longer. Again, I'm sick and tired of a few "privileged rectal orifices" impacting, and driving everyone down the wrong road. For the love of god be responsible, and think of someone other than yourselves for once. Sorry if I hurt your feelings.
RANT OVER

Hopefully, I stayed apolitical enough.

Going home today after being gone for 6 days. I hope the wx allows me to do some pedaling but I almost don’t want to even check. One day off then back at it for 5. I will say if the domestic flight ban happens I hope it happens while i’m home, I have no idea how would get home otherwise. Car rentals prices will prolly jump to atleast 2 thousand at the airport.
When one of the hurricanes hit the east coast a couple of years ago, flights east started to cancel, I got stranded in a small town in northern va, and was able to get a car for cheap, but one of my good friends got stranded in charlotte and he paid 1500 for a rental. Seems like that should be illegal, but 1500 dollars and that wasn’t a cancellation of all flights.
