Hello my friends, recently started riding fixed gear, or just I say commuting with. I got a 2010 Capo and didn't have a rush but inevitably was going to upgrade the FSA Vero crank it came with. So, I got a great offer of a 7710, I do need to repolish it, replace a thread cup on the bb(if I find one) and place it on the bike as well. I want to read your opinions on the crank, octalink, just some experiences with it, and etc haha, heck the price I got it for I can't complicate

I am not a fan of Octalink, it is not a terrible idea in theory but a proprietary system is never great. Square taper works fine and ISIS is a good idea in the fact it is open source and anyone case use it but I would rather have square taper which is fairly universal and quite easy to find quality bottom brackets for or a external bottom bracket like 24mm (Shimano, FSA, Sugino..) again easy to find BBs for. ISIS is not terrible and it has certainly kept going which is great and the concept is great as well many splines certainly can make for a better connection then just 4.

The crank you are looking at is a fine crank and nothing wrong with it (though they need a hollowtech II version of it) and if you can get the right Octalink BB you are fine and luckily you should be able to as that crank is still in use as the Dura Ace Track crank.

In my own personal case I just installed a XTR Octalink crank on a bike I am building up so if I thought it was total garbage, I wouldn't do that. Though I really wish it was square taper or hollowtech II it would make my life much easier.

90% of the used DA 7710 crank arms I've seen have a damaged Octalink interface because it's REALLY easy to mess up installing them.

The moral of the story: A "good deal" isn't necessarily a good deal.

Freak, I believe it. The shape of it seems perfect until the wrong person installs or tries too huh. I actually noticed a bit of aluminum teared out but so small I believe when installed the bolts can grab the arms since it was just a small damage. Thanks for being real though hehee 👌

Don't be afraid to try other cranksets. I've ridden the 7710s and Campy Record. Someone on this forum recommended the Andel crankset to me. This crankset is sold under a bunch of different names (like All City). The BB is a standard square taper interface, and the crankset is amazingly stiff. The chainrings are nicely machined, and round.

I know about the Andel crank, friend of mine told me how its stiff, and cheaper than the other big boys. Maybe will run into one in the future.

damn great , keep working on miles and you'll be in those watts asap . I do baby ones, 50ish per week since I do roadie also.
And I actually got my hands on a Sram Omnium Gxp today, I'm planning to try both soon as just a need for time and tools lol

and with the All City's144 bcd, you can use a lot of the older Campy Strada/Pista and Sugino front 42t rings fairly cheap, depending on your running 3/32 or 1/8" chain.

Then don't mess up installing them... I have 3 bikes with Dura Ace 7700 they all have worked flawlessly for years. And BB's are readily available.

Congratulations.

I didn't say I messed up installing them. I said I've seen many used 7710 crank arms that are messed up because people are careless and don't know how to do things properly.

Finding a DA 7710 cup is going to be tough. You can get 105 Sealed BB's in Octalink V1 still and at about 20% the cost of a whole 7700 BB if you can find one.

My recently purchased NOS track bike came with 7710 cranks and BB. So I’m good for a while. I did the research in case the BB was bad. It’s not something you can really inspect. 105 BB was my insurance.

It is a Ridley Oval. Guy built it, stored it, moved out of state.
on his return he sold it. Zero miles on the clock.

Do research 7700 & 7710 BB’s. Unless you can adjust an oldskool BB, 105 (sealed) is the way to go.

When is a "sealed cartridge BB" NOT a "sealed cartridge BB"........... When it's a "sealed BB"

The 7700 is needle bearing and seals (removable for dry track) at about 170g
The 7710 is cartridge and about 250g

I can't be totally sure which I have without removing it.
EDIT: I worked it out, I've the 7710. HERE are the 7700 maintenance instructions. If I'd had the 7700, I would be able to see the separate lock ring on the NDS. I have no lock ring.

The Dura Ace 7710 is a sealed unit just like the ultegra and 105. The DA 7700 is not sealed and can be rebuilt.

The only BB I've owned is a Hambini, and the bearings can be popped out and replaced in minutes.
Is the 7710 truly cartridge bearings (as in replaceable) is is the 7710 itself considered to be the cartridge?

The 7700 bottom bracket literally says "sealed cartridge unit" right on the center sleeve.

To this point I think im just throwing money and getting the 7710 bb, invest in the necessary tools and ride for a hundreds miles. Then, I plan on continuing the tradition of setting a Sram Omnium on my capo and yes, with the gxp bb 😒
