Assos jersey zipper broken

The zipper on my Assos jersey is broken, would it be worth getting a new zipper put on or should I get a new jersey? Any ideas on cost? We are in Georgia.

I would contact Assos depending on how vintage it might be. They have good customer service….as I sit here after post ride.

It's just a few years old, but got some heavy rotation the last few years. Worth a shot. It fits well, so I'd like to keep wearing it.

A local, to me, dry cleaner that also mends clothes has quickly repaired "broken" zippers (jersey and shorts) for me with a pair of needle nose pliers for nothing. I had asked about whether he could replace them and he fixed them while I watched instead.

The bottom of the zipper broke off, so unfortunately I think this will be a new zipper. The piece that broke off opposite the side you pull up.

Seriously, take it to your local sewing supply shoppe, and those nice ladies who sew can advise you on how to fix it, or they may do it for you. They be experts.

I'll second the dry cleaners. I bought 4 Mavic spring/fall jerseys years ago that were on huge discount at the local chain LBS. Quickly found out the zippers were crap and failed very early. But the rest of those jerseys was excellent. So I bought 4 matching zippers at an outdoor supply place and took everything to the local dry cleaner. They worked with a woman who did repairs. ( I had to pay cash upfront; $30 per jersey so perhaps not all by the books.) The work had some touches that were clearly aimed at women's clothing but the workmanship was excellent. It's been around 15 years, they are my most used jerseys and all the zippers work super.

Third taking it to the dry cleaners or anywhere that does alterations. Zipper replacement should be an easy job. Fifteen years ago it was about $10 per jersey but I'm sure the prices have gone up along with everything else, but still should be much cheaper than a new jersey.

That sounds like $10 or $15 at a local shop that does seamstress and alterations work....Which, in my experience, should be easier and more pleasant than dealing with Assos CS.

I just had the zipper replaced on my Specialized windbreaker. A new windbreaker with similar features (e.g. removable sleeves to convert to a vest, high visibility fabric, elastic waistband with silicone "gripper" to prevent the garment from riding up my back, etc.) is about $120 - $150, depending on brand. Replacing the zipper with a heavier-duty one was $45 at an alterations shop. I've also had zippers replaced at the ankles of my wool tights. Those were less money, ~$15/ea.

My ex and I used to take our stuff to a seamstress who was originally from Eastern Europe. She did amazing work that was often invisible except on very close inspection, Unfortunately for us, she retired.

If you’re able to find a great seamstress or cobbler, hold onto them. We live in such a disposable society, skills like theirs are becoming rarer.

Same thing happened to me (the 'retainer box' broke) on an irreplaceable event jersey and it sent me down the zipper rabbit hole. My wife, an accomplished quilter, hates zippers. My daughter, an accomplished costumer for theater, lives in another state. So I did the next best thing: bought a zipper and took it on vacation to the best little old lady seamstress there is - Mom.

Sounds like you’ve got everything sewn up. See what I did there?

I used to impose on my wife to do things like zipper replacements. But despite being retired, she has filled her time with English language tutoring, Spanish language lessons, babysitting our new grandson, etc., so now I outsource these jobs to local seamstresses.

Did you lose the zipper slider and the stop? If Assos won’t help you can buy new ones and stops. Jersey zippers are small. May be a no. 3.

Post #7 is a very good answer. It is what I did and they sent me to an alteration shop a block away. They were able to replace the zipper and did a great job. The jersey was a "one of a kind event jersey" so that's why I spent the money (about $40) to do it.
