Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Fowl Play

Playing chicken with a Canada goose is a bad idea.

When I realized the big guy and his feathered friends weren't moving, I managed to avoid catastrophe at the last minute. Dude still clipped me in the knee with his wing.

Reason #13682 to stay off the MUP...

Or you could just slow down when approaching them. Especially since their poops are pretty slippery...

Yeah, you don't mess around with the geese. They will *not* get out of the way.

ive got experience with this one. You have to bellow and i mean scream at em like your the reaper come to laywaste to there existence. Quite funny actually but they will move when you get loud...one year at a park my dog (60lb boxer) wanted to say hello and got mob attacked by about 2 dozen geese. Had me laughing until he headed for me aaack RUN

lot of turkeys and a few peacocks this way also - they seem to react the same. points for getting the peacock to open its spread

Where's the fun in that?

And the whole trail was an obstacle course and slip-a-palooza today. Wet leaves, pine cones, pine needles, kamikaze kids...

I've successfully played chicken with the chickens.

(On the local MUP there's an area where a flock of feral chickens hang out. If you tell someone, "I'll meet you by the chickens" they'll know what you mean.)

Geese are a whole 'nother story, however.

Heh, I'll have to try that.

The winery down the road has peacocks. Even though they're appallingly stupid, I wanted to get some at one point - until, that is, I learned that they like to sit on your roof and scream at 3:00 am.

You're from the PNW - were you on the Burke-Gilman? That trail, especially the area south of where the chicken/geese like to hang out in Bothell, is pretty much unuseable after the leaves fall.

i've encountered geese on the MUP they are very hesitant to move and will wait a while before they do. its usually best to slow down around them atleast.
