I have an 85 Prestige and Competition, I would give almost my left arm (I am right handed) to get a Super Course and/or a Grand Prix, in the 85 year series. They are the ones with the chrome headtube like the one you are craddling like a baby!!

Recent purchase --- a Raleigh Sports. Nothing too special here but I love it! This is the third Raleigh 3 speed I have owned. The others were from the 50s. There is just something about the Raleigh 3 speed, I love the way they ride. This one is all original, except for the Saddle. I am looking for one (a leather Brooks I presume) and if you have an extra, get a hold of me. Also would love a bag that attaches to the saddle. The person I bought it from said they acquired it used from the original owner who bought it new in 1978. Serial number is RN9457969 which if I understand it correctly indicates is was made in Canada. Interesting to me these bikes have finally arrived. Though not worth a lot, the Raleighs I had previously I paid almost nothing for and then when I sold them I basically gave them away. This was in 80s.

Went to physio this morning and always like this spot for pictures... added a mousetrap and a headlight to make the bike just that much more practical.

I have a lot of nice hand built bicycles that are one of a kind but also have a great, and perhaps perverse affection for classic Raleigh bicycles.

For the most part, they were the bicycle for the common man and woman and came with little pretense and were just solid and dependable bikes... the Sports was built to last 100 years and like this bike, they get handed down and passed along between many generations.

The previous owner of this bike is in his mid seventies and he got it new in 1950-51 when he was a kid.

Did you use a modern S3X hub for that 3-speed fixed-gear?

If so, how is that working, thus far? I have one of those hubs, and intend to build it up into a complete bike soon, maybe put the wheel on my already-fixed Super Course 12. (I call it a Super Course 1-2. One speed, two brakes...). PM me if you don't want to mess up this thread....

here's a build i did last week for a winter beater. think it's a mid sixties record frame. mix of components from many other bikes. single speed.

Another one that found a home with me: a 1984 Corsa. It's dirty, a little scruffy, but all the Golden Arrow bits are present and accounted for. Needs a lot of TLC, a new saddle, bar tape and brake lever hoods.

'72 Gran Sports: I just picked mine up last night so it needs a bit of work. It's been hanging in a barn for 30+ years. I plan on giving it a complete overhaul while keeping it as stock as possible. If anyone has any experience with these simplex shifters/derailleurs, I'd love to hear from you - I'm debating whether to keep these or not.

You have a wonderful bike there. The GS is truly one of Raleigh's best rides, and though I am biased, I think it's one of the nicest looking as well, in the original lagooon blue/white paint schemes.

Inspect your derailleurs carefully for incipient cracks. Actually it's best to replace the front derailleur with a metal one because it can break and get caught up in your chain wheel.
The rear is far less likely to break, except for the pulleys and these can be replaced easily with Suntour parts. These Simples RDs actually function quite nicely.

The Simplex Prestige DT shifters are flexy, and prone to breakage. Get the all-metal ones or a pair of Suntour Power DT shifters.

The catalog lists the color as "coffee", but it would have to be pretty weak coffee. "Copper" is closer to it.

I had this Marathon for a couple years after pulling it out of a dumpster.



It was damaged in parking lot collision prior to a charity ride. The derailleur hanger was bent to an odd angle, and the dropout opened up a bit on that side.

I put this bike up here because, with any luck, it is the "before" picture of a transformation. I'm putting together a plan in my head involving resurrecting the bike in a non-derailleur configuration. Stay tuned.

Raleigh Competition (81) that I built up last year.

I bought the bare frame from a dealer so it has a motley assortment of components. I was able to find Record and Nuovo Recard parts for the more visible components. After this shot I laced up a pair of high flange Normandy hubs to Weinmann rims.

Very nice to ride, a light and delicate feel.
