I've wanted to fine-tune this bike for a long time. The old two-bolt panto post was limiting in that it doesn't really invite one to play around with saddle positions! The modern, one-bolt Super Record post is my fave and finally I found a pantographed one recently to cap off my flagship Colnago.

The Hi-Low hub has been exclusive to this bike since the early 2000s. Except for Cino 2014, it's never worn another pair of wheels since the Hi-Low was built up and designated for this bike. I'm the kind of guy who doesn't swap wheels between bikes
You know you are among C&V friends when you can refer to a Super Record post as "The Modern"...

The seatpost, stem and bar are the constants of my 1989 Master Piu. I bought the post and stem used back then and they have been on the bike all the time. And I too believe them to be "modern".

Good grief! I have to stop dropping into this thread. More Colnago panto bits! Someday my Super will be fully dressed in those tasty pieces...

Great looking Nago for sure!

Build Update

Considering my original post, https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...t-colnago.html, was moved to the Appraisals forum and the value to me has now been determined (priceless!), I thought it was time for another post. Relying only on my parts bin, I ended up with a Shimano Frankenbike build made up primarily of Ultegra and Dura Ace components. None-the-less, I love the way she looks and rides. Someday I may hunt down a complete Campy SR group but for now just plan on riding and enjoying the heck out of her.

It appears I never posted this here. I'll have a blue 198? Nuovo Mexico with Gilco tubes and full panto component set ready soon I hope.

Colnago can be ugly, too. I worked at it. Yes, Dura Ace.
Black parts on the frame are cross-hatched like carbon fiber.
Hence the bottle cage and the crankset. Nice rain bike.

I bought a Colnago just for that feature, 53/40... nice combo... but they made a 36 too... hard to find that. Would like to, that might be a chainring that requires being made to order. Scarce.

Yeah, right! An ugly Colnago! No such animal my friend. Ernesto doesn't do ugly.

Nice acquisition Robbie. Your Italian roots are showing these days!

Nice 'rain' bike!!

No one will notice the missing spokes at Eroica, just keep riding or keep it in motion. 👓

I recently rode the Master in the rain. It is very sure-footed. I did spend a couple of hours cleaning it up though.

My Bottecchia has a bent fork, not sure which fork I like best.

C97 and unknown Colnago.

Actualy, the Red bicycle is a bit of a mystery to me. It has obviously been repainted at some stage. The frame and lugs are very similar to the yellow C97, except that there are virtually No clovers or any other markings visible. Also the fork is bent, rather then straith like the C97. A C96 maybe??

Refurbished Super??, with modern Tiagra 10sp group.

C97 Decor with Campagnolo Chorus 9sp.

Early 1990's SLX Spiral Conic Frame & Fork

I am trying to decently touch up the mangled paint on this frame (I know, GOOD LUCK!) But a repaint to even a single color will cost about $400 - $500, from what I know.
A couple of questions;
*Is it worth it?
*Are these somewhat rare or at least unusual?
*Is it a sin to load a Shimano 7700 series groupset on this baby?
Anyway, thanks.

I'm not sure what you could do to fix that paint without a full re-paint. And trying to get an original paint job like the bike has now would likely run you big bucks. Touch-ups seem futile because there is just to much to do and paint matching looks like it would be tough. But it can't hurt to try. I think I would just put the Shimano on it and ride the heck out of it. That is a great frame by all accounts.

I think only you can answer 'is it worth it' by amount of money put into or is it for sentimental reasons and what are your plans for it when finished (re-sell, does it fit and will you ride, wall hanger, etc?).

Currently don't know what you have in it but a high level custom paint and graphics often exceeds $1000. Quotes are published online by many known builders. If you invest your own labor and DIY, obviously it significantly saves, but to compare equally with the pro's, consider the cost of materials (paint / chem).

Certainly are not common.

Shimano + Colnago. Go for it. Highly respectable teams rode with both sponsor's.
