Cheap SSCX bike?
OK. New track bike secured for the summer season, so it's time to think about the fall.
I think I'm going to keep the single-speed vibes going with SSCX this year. I have a bunch of spare track parts I could repurpose (extra crankset, lotsa cogs, etc.), and since i don't really need to worry too much about UCI rules, I was thinking I could:

- Buy and dress up and old canti MTB with rad 80s rattlecan paint and maybe some drops (though 26" tires could be a pain)
- Look for a State Warhawk or something similar that's already good to go

The State Warhawk looks like a ridiculously good buy at less than $600 and would be way better suited for casual CX racing than a rebuilt hybrid or 26" MTB.
If cantis are cool and you have a bunch of parts already, I have to imagine there's lots of older geared aluminum CX bikes out there collecting dust that could be purchased for less than the cost of the Warhawk.
In a similar vein, I'm going to build my old canti CAADX into a SSCX race bike this season. The frame on that seems pretty much bombproof.

I road and raced one (Motobecane Fantom Cross, with gears). Mine was aluminum & Ultegra - still use it. Decent bike for the money, even if the design was a little dated. Got mine off craigs list for about the price of the SS/4130 one below new.

Another vote for old hybrid bikes. Look for the ones that were more "sporty" like the Jamis Codas, Marin Fairfax, Trek 7400 etc rather than the lardy cruiser bikes. Convert to drop bars, newer gearing and you'd be hard pressed to know these are not a modern gravel bike.
