Going for Sufferlandrian Knighthood

Yesterday morning I made the following post on FaceBook announcing my intentions:

"What is your Saturday morning routine? Mine mirrors most that have diabetes in that every Saturday morning I wake up and prick my finger to test my blood glucose level. Even though through diet and cycling I have beat my disease into remission I must be ever diligent because it can come back. I am once again riding in the Tour de Cure in Spokane May 2015. To help kickstart my fund raising efforts I am also adding a Sufferfest Knighthood attempt on January 17th 2015. The Sufferfest is a producer of cycling trainer workouts (running workouts as well). To become a Knight of Sufferlandria I must complete 10 videos in succession with no more than a ten minute break between each. Currently there are only 68 Knights within United States. Total time on the bike for this will be about equal to my ride Seattle to Portland only at much more intensity, on a trainer indoors. Please consider making a donation to encourage me to succeed in the Knighthood attempt. Knights of Sufferlandria"

This will be the hardest thing I've ever done on a bike. Knighthood is a stretch goal for me. I will achieve it. It will hurt.

You are a braver man than I! After doing a couple of those training sessions I can't imagine the pain and suffering doing 10 in row. But, the pride and sense of accomplishment not to mention the title of Sufferlandrian Knight that will follow will be well worth it. Go get 'em!

FYI, you just made me add another item to my cycling bucket list...

Tell you what - if you hit it, I'll donate $100 to your TdC campaign. Maybe you'll get the free socks or something.

Good luck!

I don't know how you'd prove it so I'll just trust you - get pedaling.

I will be riding in the TDC indy again next year and I just pay what I need to raise so I can do the ride. This is a great way for you to raise funds and I'm really impressed. I will sponsor you a few bucks for your efforts.

My wife and I both are red riders and we appreciate what you are doing as well!

Three ways to follow my progress or read about it after:
  1. strava, each video willl be uploaded right after completion
  2. Facebook, if you are a friend I'll be giving updates, mabe even pics
  3. ride report here and elsewhere after.
Thanks 1loosemoose!

I don't "do" facebook on general principle so I hope you post a ride report. Hopefully a nice before and after picture so we can see how miserable you are after sitting in the same spot for 12 hours.

Not really, I will likely start with rubber glove and may finish with violator or revolver. I'll also include HHNF, There is No Try, Angles, Blender, AVDP, ISLAGIATT, Fight club and maybe Downward Spiral. How about you?

Opening with Rubber Glove? Good god man! Are you even more masochistic than we first imagined? If I even tried, it would be all about, The Wretched, There is No Try, Angles, Downward Spiral, AVDP, ISLAGIATT, hmmm where to from there?

Are you allowed repeats? If not, there's no way around some serious groveling, HHNF, Rubber Glove, etc.

An update of sorts. So far my order seems likely to be:
  1. Rubber Glove
  2. Angles (old one)
  3. A Very Dark Place
  4. Fight Club
  5. Downward Spiral
  6. There Is No Try
  7. The Hunted
  8. The Wretched
  9. Revolver
  10. Violator

A couple of women grad students that I ride with have suggested that we do it at our LBS. They are wanting to ride some of the videos with me likely trading off as in a relay. They also want to make the final one a special spin class. I can see lots of positives to this plan. It would be great exposure for the Sufferfest and my charity. It just happens that the date I choose is also our towns winter brew festival so there will be lots of folks in town, although most will not be stopping by the LBS there will be some extra traffic.

Will you be posting online from the bike store. You will get lots of encouragement if you announce your date, order on the Facebook page 'Sufferlandrian Knighthood Questhood planning committee'. I would recommend joining that group if you have not already. I posted a picture for every video I did and responded to feedback during my ride. Got encouragement all the way through the ride.
Let me know if you have any questions.

OK, those names sound... you know.

You should make arrangements for somebody to start delivering beer to you around "The Wretched" That might get you through the misery of those last few videos.

Sir Allen yes I'll be posting updates, or they will be posted on my behalf by LOML. Yeah I'm a member of that group on FB.

Oh there will be beer, free flowing after, during would be too much, might dull the suffering and that is simply not allowed by the rules.

Alright, then just have somebody put a frosty pint in front of your trainer - that'll add to the suffering and should be within the rules.

I didn't change my hydration through my attempt. Kept to 1/3 Gatorade and 2/3 water mix. I did have pickle juice at the ready. I had an ale waiting for me, but honestly didn't feel like it after I finished. Probably good that I didn't do it in a public place. During the 10 minute rest all I did was take my shoes off and lie on the floor.
If you were closer I would stop by and ride a video with you.
