would like an opinion on a craig's list bike

i came across this last night...i've been wanting a new ride lately but still look used from time to time. my current ride is '08 trek 1.2 @ 52cm and this appears to have a similar geometry and being one cm larger i doubt would change much.

i can't quite tell what year but at least 2017 and likely a year or two older based on description.

.
...I read the ad. That sounds like a divorce bike to me. There are some karmic complications that come with that.

Only one misleading thing in the posting. The poster says it is as fast as it looks. Unfortunately they don't provide any HP or torque figures, so really just how fast is that bike? Only as fast as the motor, my friend.

I'd say the group set is at least 10 years older than that.

Yup. Much older than 2017. Shimano released the internal shift cable 7900 series in 2008. This bike has the older 7800 with the exposed shift cables.

given no surprises in frame integrity and the key elements are in good condition (replacing chainrings can be pricey...)
and the 'fit' is inline with buyer's expectations.
even though it might be older - 10 spd - I find 10 spd to be awesome good.
I think it's well worth the asking price - for someone who will ride it often/ a lot.
HED wheels of most any age are awesome, dura ace is awesome, rim brakes are totally fine for me.
If I was shopping and it was in my area, I'd be all over that.
... just over the 'black everything' thing... But I could suffer through that and maybe add some discreet 'color' ..
Ride On

Agree the groupset on this bike is about 15 years old, but if all in good working order it's still worth considering.

Of course, caveat emptor.

FYI there is a volunteer "facilitators" thread, the early part is not always updated so it means you may have to read a bit to find someone in your location of interest, but there are many members of BF who are willing to go and have an in-person look and report or otherwise help you out

My only concern is if it has an FH-7800 and not the FH7850 freehub.

The FH-7800 had the short lived aluminum freehub body that required tall spline cassettes. It is generally to be avoided.

I don't believe it is compatible with the older or newer DA bodies so you have to replace the entire freehub. Probably with an extremely expensive freehub if you stick with 10 speed Dura Ace.

John

Edit added: You should also be aware that the capacity of an RD-7800-SS is 29t. It is rated for a max cog of 27t and you might be able to run a 28t.

Thanks all. I've reached out to the seller and am hoping to hook up on my ride home from work tomorrow or later in the week.
I don't mind 10 spd or rim brakes. I too noticed the seemingly older drive train but with a recent purchase of a '97 vitus 979 with 8 spd 105 installed it shifts better than my new 10 spd tiagra. Hoping g for the same goodness.

That will sell quickly. Like to the first person who goes to look at it.
