Rim drive trainer issue

I just bought a Minoura rim drive trainer off CL and the pedal stroke is really jerky instead of the smooth action I'm used to from my old fluid type. Minoura even mentions this on their website as a weakness of RD trainers. Has anyone found a way to deal with this? Thanks
