I found a small nutdriver one day and the next day I found two selfstarter screws I believe to be responsible for slicing my tubeless rear tire.

Found a rusty but otherwise decent pair of pliers. Actually stopped and picked them up.

I believe I saw that very same cow. Was it in a pasture out on Samoa Blvd?

Sad.

Lying on someone's lawn on the way to work this morning. Tempting, but I resisted.

I interpret what I "found" on the ground while riding to be something I could choose to pick up and take with me. Otherwise it is just something that I saw on the ground. So some things I have found and other things I have only seen.

Actually it was on the 101 safety corridor, about 1/2 mile south of the Sunny Brae exit.

Sunglasses, screwdrivers, many drill bits, a box cutter two different times, work gloves
I had one corner I marked off in my mind to look for good things on the ground. It was looking like a hotspot. Most finds are at corners.

Stuff I've found over the years:
  • Towels
  • Socks
  • Shoes
  • Gloves (almost always single)
  • an old Snap-on ratchet driver - once I rebuilt it, it was a fantastic tool for my toolkit
  • Mini pocket knives (legal in the UK ones)
  • Multitools (about 7-8, nice ones I kept, the rest went to friends)
  • frame pump - would have gone on my bike if I could be bothered to get mounts for it
  • Chains (cambridge is known for worn out bikes, would not be surprised if the chains snapped from age)
  • numerous lighters - I take 'em all
  • a stapler
  • sunglass attachments - the kind that clip onto reading glasses, new and in original box. I kept them, despite them looking alarmingly 'American Tourist'

The list is big and keeps getting bigger. but this is over years - us Brits keep our roads oddly clean.

I passed by a really nice stainless steel pet bowl today. On a highway - not a residential area - so it was definitely up for grabs. Had I not been on a group ride and had limited space in my jersey pockets, I would have snagged it.

Missed opportunities.

This really belongs in the thread about unusual things you saw on your ride. Last night I was riding home around 9:30 when I saw a fawn off to the side of the bike path. The path is under high voltage power lines on one side, and single family suburban homes on the other and I've never seen an animal that big in that area before. I'm not sure where mom was, but Bambi was freaked out by me and my lights.

In my city we have a large marsh right in the center of town that has all kinds of wildlife with MUPs mostly on old railroad lines running through it. I used to ride across a short section of it on my way to work in the mornings and one time up ahead I could see a whitetail doe and 2 fawns on the trail that went back into the marsh and disappeared by the time I got there. I saw them a few more times in the same area after that.
Once early in the evening when I was riding on the same stretch of trail I could see in the distance an animal on the road that was yellow and I remember saying to myself, "please don't let it be a dog" and it also was a deer that ran into the marsh.

We've got plenty of deer in the forest preserves around here, but this was miles away from any of them. I could see the glare of the predator eyes reflecting back from my lights and wondered what it was, being pretty relieved when I saw it was a fawn. And more scared of me than I was of it.

I had to dodge a large pile of vomit this morning....twice. One with my bike tires and a second time for the kids trailer tires.

Disgusting.
