Hi,
Really need your help. I looked for replacement hoods and about 7 choices appeared.

Does anyone have any experience ordering replacement hoods for the Shimano 105 .. 9 speed ?

Going to be used on a Lemond Alpe D' Huez circa 2003

What's wrong with those? No one will see them when your hands are covering them. Are those ST-5600 STI's? The number should be embossed on the body of the STI if you pull the rubbery part up or down and look, I think they'll be the same as Ultegra ST-6600. Amazon and a few other places have them. However, I'm not sure if they are Shimano made or just knockoffs that someone is making since Shimano has long discontinued production of that STI.

Or are you wanting the entire STI?

+1. According to Shimano they're the same hoods. EV-ST-5600-2441A.pdf (shimano.com) Ebay has a few available. shimano 6600 hoods for sale | eBay I have only used the genuine Shimano hoods on my 6600's so can't say if any of the knockoffs are quality or not. They are inexpensive though.

No, the OP's brifters are 5500 series 9 speed units. The ST-x600 series were 10 speed. Easy to tell the difference between both series, the name plates are different and the angle that the body extend from the handlebar was changed. The hoods are not interchangeable.

More specifically, the OP's 105 looks like the ST-5500-CA, assuming the name plate & hoods are original. This was the later version of the 5500 that used the Flightdeck with the buttons on both R/L brifters, same setup as the later ST-5510. The best fit for replacement are hoods for the ST-5510/6510, (same part #).

Other hoods for the ST-65xx/55xx are similar but differ in how it fits over the removable plate for the Flightdeck connection.

As far as I know nobody makes new replacement hoods for 9 speed and older Shimano brifters.

I order shimano ST 5510 hoods?
They do have the "dimple" for the flight deck.
of course that's long gone

Yes, the ST-5510 is the closest replacement for fitting the Flightdeck cover, color is opaque black vs. the translucent 'smoke' of the original 55xx/65xx series hoods. Don't know if the material was changed but the 5510's material seems to be like all other hoods from Shimano.

At this point, grab anything you can find from the 55xx/65xx series, all will fit except for the Fdeck cover area, which can be modified/removed if needed. If you check the EV doc from Shimano, you'll see the Fdeck cover changed on the various versions of these brifters.

All versions are now expensive & hard to find 'new' since these brifter sales ended in 2006 +/-. Glad I still have a supply of these.

Have you looked under the hoods for the exact model number of those STI's? Shimano made 5 different versions of those STI's and I think there are 3 maybe 4 different part numbers for the hoods that fit them. So not all versions are quite the same and may not fit the other.

That confirms that it is not a 5600. The bracket is the same for all the 5500 sub-variants.

Now check the Flightdeck cover, see if there is a diagonal cut-out. Compare to EV doc. Probably the variant I posted above.

The hoods have recesses to match the Fdeck cover, all currently hard to find "new'. No aftermarket made from the usual 3rd party suppliers.

Great info..really SHOCKED that NO ONE makes these or similar.
The hoods are NOT sticky and in pretty good shape.
I want to wash them.
I picked up this bike last week.
When I have washed hoods in the past...they get a little sticky.
I used dishsoap warm water and sponge.

Now to find the best way to clean hoods

There was a recent thread on hoarding spare parts, which had most respondents thinking of shifters, derailers, and cassettes. Wish I'd had the foresight to start hoarding brifter hoods 15 years ago!

Yes, 15 years ago would have been nice. Most of my brifter hoods were hoarded about 6 years ago and the prices for 7/8/9 sp. hoods were already quite high, but luckily still somewhat available (except for the DAs).

Use a vinyl or leather upholstery cleaner. They will be slick for a bit but will dry with time. The older white shimano brake hoods were the ones that melted away.

Like spray on the hoods ? Or on a rag?
How long to dry?
Will there be any "stickyness" on the hoods?
I only ask because it sounds like you have experience doing this.

Try spraying on a towel and rub it in. Wipe until dry. Live and learn, lol. I use it on saddles also.

I will generally just clean hoods with isopropyl alcohol and call it a day. It will clean off the grime and sweat and such and dry up quickly and generally not cause harm to anything. The mechanic at the shop I manage loves the stuff and uses it on nearly anything it is a fine degreaser and their special blend which has alcohol really cleans a bike well.

Really? Where can you get replacement 9 speed hoods? I've looked high and low for replacements for ST-6510 shifters, and can't find any.

As stated, this was 6 or so years ago. Was already in the $50-60 range back then, don't know what they go for now.

May need to check my stock and see what I have left & may no longer need.

There has been a thread or two on this site from awhile back where someone had found a more current and available hood that was not perfect but workable to replace those. Do a search and you may get lucky to find the threads.
