FAVORITE bike movie, not BEST. subjectivity is the point of this thread ...

while breaking away has so much excellent riding ( drafting the truck on the highway is still a scene that makes my heart pump and raises goosebumps ) i have a particular affinity for quicksliver ...

Although cheesey, I love me some American Flyers. It captured a time that I think about when I was good.

Flying Scotsman. Graham Obree designs and fabricates his own bike and perseveres against multiple adversities. It also gives a glimpse into the politics of Cycling's administrative bodies.

Agree, love both Breaking Away and American Flyers but many other greats, here one I recommend:

A Sunday in Hell (1976)

This classic Danish documentary paints a memorable image of the 1976 Paris-Roubaix in all its gritty, cobbled glory. Watch for the insider footage of big wins, crashes, and some of the biggest names in cycling at the time, including Eddy Merckx, Roger De Vlaeminck, and Freddy Maertens. It’s the next best thing to traveling back in time and experiencing all the action and ambience of the spring classics firsthand.

I voted 'other'. I get that not loving 'Breaking Away' is sacrilege, but its just hilariously poorly scripted and acted. The parents are hardly well developed characters and if they were, it would be so much better since the entire overarching storyline is Dave's poor relationship with his father. Also, the controversy and tension between the townies and college kids is hilarious. Its forced and shown in the most extreme of ways. Funny that IU wanted its students to be portrayed in such an unrealistically negative way.

The riding scenes were neat though.

Since good cycling movies is sorta an oxymoron to me, ill go full nuclear option and say the mockumentary Tour de Pharmacy is the best cycling movie. Its over the top, but means to be.
The documentary about Pantani was also good to watch.

I liked how it's a movie about an ordinary every day transaction by ordinary people who don't quite understand what's going on but go on doing what they do despite the obstacles.

Quicksilver

It came at the right time. The others spoke to me in volume as well but I will think about this one more as I tear through traffic.

Footnote: I think it's sad when bike movies are so outnumbered by war movies.

A Sunday in Hell does it for me too. The cinematography is amazing, as are the scenes of Merckx at the top of his form, being The Cannibal.

I loved Triplets of Belleville so much, my wife and I saw it twice in the theater on the week it came out, and then we bought the DVD.

I love Breaking Away.

The Bicycle Thief is an excellent, beautiful movie.

I very much liked Deux Secondes and recommend it. Also called Two Seconds.

Thanks for the reminders of the titles I still need to see.

Triplets of Belleville in 2nd place\

Since we're not making qualitative judgements, there's another NFB film, Steve Bauer: Inside Out
It 's not great but it's a lot of behind the scenes insight into early spring training and races in Belgium.

This -- “The Triplets of Belleville”. The surrealist approach is perfect for how a long, grueling ride actually feels.

Love "Breaking Away," "American Flyers," and "Quicksilver." All great.

But for me, even though it's the "wrong" type of bike, it has to be "Rad." Just an amazing movie in every way, and I could watch it a million times without getting tired of it. That opening sequence with the flatland riders was just ****ing amazing.

"BMX Bandits" was also a lot of fun.

Can't agree with you here. I thought the acting was actually really good. Dave's character was done perfectly, as was his Mother, his GF, Cyrill, Moocher, the jerk frat boy, and his father. Maybe Dennis Quaid was just a touch over the top in some scenes, but I really wouldn't complain.

I also wouldn't say that Dave's relationship with his father was the most important story line. The term "coming of age" is overused, but in this case the movie was the epitome of a coming of age film, and his father was just one aspect of that.

I've only seen it on the youtubes, but another film that's been discussed a lot here is Louis Malle's "Vive Le Tour." I could watch this again and again -- it's gorgeous.

X2.

I also like Breaking Away but I see it as comedy almost as much as a bike movie.

On the other hand, or foot, Tour De Pharmacy is another good "other" movie. Even more comedic based around the vintage era issues. Wait, some are still issues.
