Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm back on the commuter wagon this week. Only 74 miles this week due to being sick on Monday, but it's a start!

In order to pay for my sins (two weeks off the bike), I am forcing myself to ride single speed and take the hilly routes through the end of January. Hopefully, my legs and heart will emerge a bit stronger.

50 miles riding the local backroads. Saw 2 coyotes, 3 deer, and a mountain lion. Quite unusual.

Friday: 29 miles, mostly north/south routes to push into stiff headwind and enjoy the tailwind on the return trip. Good for the legs.
Saturday: Couple of hours on the indoor trainer doing intervals, core, arm and leg work with light weights.
Sunday: 21 miles, easy solo recovery pace. Because the local club's "recovery" quickly turns into a tempo pace ride.

Upto just over 450miles this year which has so far consisted of my 3rd "on week" and last week which was supposed to be my easy week in 4.
This weekend i decided to pull my re-test forwards to saturday from monday (today) on account if the ride I had planned on sunday. Sunday did a brutal group ride with some ex pro's who i ride with regularly. 115 miles with around 4k feet of climbing on what turned out to be one of the windiest days of the year, typically it turned out to be tail wind out with the hills and solid headwind all the way home.

Really glad I decided to test on saturday as I'm knackered today 😂

Took Saturday off and did about 25 miles today with a ton of pretty steep hill repeats. Trying to get stronger. Not sure if it's working or not. Guess we'll see.

My first sub-8h 200km (7h 31m total time, 6h 44m moving time, avg 29.7kmh). Legs feeling like crap now. TrainingPeaks Form dropped like a rock, today it is at -31. Also, chased by stray dogs for a bit :-)

Weather is weird again. Warm and muggy for January. Windy too. Saturday and Sunday did my Picnic Is. to Davis Is. ride. 42 miles each day.

Well , it has been cold in the mornings as I ride through the citrus orchards on my way to Ventura. I mostly do the same ride every week and then a little detour once I get to the coast. This time of the year off shore winds are common and make for a challenging ride home. Yesterday I rode the Medici to Ventura and my Super Mondia home . About a 30 mile round trip depending on the detour. I have been enjoying my newly acquired Medici and really looking forward to putting on a different freewheel so I can do the entire ride with it . Right now with the little boy gears it would be too much walking up hill to get home!. I probably should have chosen the Windsor Pro for the ride home as it has narrower tires than the Mondia , I think it would have helped with the head wind. Joe
