The cx Focus Mares mounts 1 1/8 1 1/4 forks. I bought one for cantis on ebay.
Modern Mares are for discs.

Now I'm (even more) confused. I see that my Vaya has a 44mm head tube...specs say the headset is ZS44 upper, EC44 lower. So if the head tube is 44mm, why wouldn't it accept a 1 1/2 taper, assuming I have the proper headset?

Salsa says the Vaya stem clamp is 28.6 mm. The The Cane Creek headset fit finder tool agrees.

https://salsacycles.com/files/tech/1...amesheet_F.pdf

The Cane Creek tool also says that the crown race seat is only 33 mm (1.2999 inches)

I'm not sure the Vaya Ti has the fork supposed. I could be mistaken. Has it been measured?

I'm not sure I understand your point. The lower headset is a EC44/33, which is, as I understand it, what you would would use for a 1 1/4" taper. My last point is that, if that is true, then the head tube is ID 44mm, which should accept a EC44/40 lower, which is the lower one would use for a 1 1/2" taper.

On several current Salsa and Surly models, the headtube diameter on the frame is straight, 44mm. With the correct headset, you can run different fork "standards," including 1 1/8 straight steerer, tapered 1 1/8 to 1 1/4 (this is what you have currently), or 1 1/8 to 1 1/2 (this is the most common current standard for full carbon tapered steerer forks). Your Vaya has it all covered, you would just need to change the headset. Cane Creek, for one, makes about a jillion different headset models, covering most modern "standards."

My point is that the Vaya probably doesn’t have a 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 fork.

If it has a 1 1/8 - 1 1/4 fork then replacement is easy and this whole exercise is unnecessary.

Niner makes a super nice fork.

I said the bike has a 1 1/8 - 1 1/4 fork in my very first post. The 1 1/4" tapers are rather difficult to find. The 1 1/2" tapers are ubiquitous. Fortunately, with the proper headset, my 44mm head tube will accept a 1 1/8 to 1 1/2 fork, as another poster noted, so I'm good to go should I ever crack my existing fork.

Anyway, thanks for your input.

Yes, I did eventually figure all this out. I guess I should have entitled my OP, "School me on forks, tapers and headsets!"

Thanks for your input.

I misread your first post. You are right. An EC44/40 lower headset will probably allow you to convert to a 1.5 inch taper.

sorry for the trouble.
