Raleigh Competition from original owner
To follow up on my last thread
I finally caved and bought the bike
Owner got it in 1983 and rode it for 30km
It the sat in his garage till i picked it up today
Nuff said now pics

Cousin to your low mileage 1983 Competition

When I first read your post I thought it said 30K - 30,000 something, no way!
I have a number of low mileage bikes that I've acquired over the years. I've paid extra for a few of those bikes but I've usually gotten them for a very good price.
Saturday afternoon impulse buys, gifts, whatever, the buyers rode the bikes a few times and then they sat in the garage or basement. Frequently improper fit or adjustment so they were never comfortable riding for the owners.
Their loss, my gain!
One of those bikes is related to your 1983 Competition.
It's a 1979 Raleigh "Record" that I bought back in 2011. The bike was in mint condition with far less than 100 miles on it.

The story behind this bike: in 1979 the seller worked next door to Raleigh's US headquarters in Boston, MA. A friend of his worked for Raleigh and told him that they received around 100 of these "Record" bikes by mistake.
They were intended for the European market. Rather than ship them back to the UK or Europe, Raleigh decided to dump them off in the US so the original owner got a real deal.
The frame is a 1979 Competition GS in Raleigh Team Kit. The US Competition GS bikes came in black or silver with a Campy Nuovo Gran Sport gruppo.
These Euro market bikes came with a mishmash of components: Suntour Cyclone derailleurs with ratchet shifters, Raleigh badged SR Sakae Ringyo AX-5LA cranks, and SR seatpost with a Selle Italia Super Turbo saddle, Cinelli 1a stem with Mod 65 bars, Campy NR pedals, Mavic sewup wheels with Normandy Luxe Competition small flange hubs and Modolo Speedy brakes.
The bars and stem, saddle, pedals and Benotto Cello Tape were upgrades. I suspect that it may have been display or show bike. Either that or the person who worked at Raleigh did the upgrades - unofficially???
A seller in Oregon had 3 of these Euro "Records" NOS-NIB for sale back then that he picked up cheap so the story has a lot of credence.
The ride and handling is similar to mid 70's Raleigh Pros.

Quick impressions
Paint has very few spots needing touchups.
It is my size
Shakedown ride was fantastic
First bike with full 531. Lovely handling
Bike is very light compared To my SL frames
The chain is still good / i am surprised
I am tempted To leave it as is but....
170 crank. That has To go
