Hi All, can anyone advise me on where I might get a folding Frame only, (don't need the fork), with the folding handlebar stem? I am actually looking for a Carbon Fiber folder, but a light weight aluminum non suspension folder with disc brake mounts and the folding handle bar stem would be awesome !! Any hints....I want to buy my self a new toy.. Saw a Airminal in South Korea for 750.00, but couldn't get enough info on it...Don, San Francisco

There are a few full sized carbon fibre mountain bike frame that come up on ebay sometimes. Can't remember any names at the moment. The other one that comes to mind is the ori supra. Only available as full bike afaik.

Folds like a birdie with carbon forks, road race set up with 27 speeds. Its has standard brakes but 135 hubs so you can fit what hubs you want.

I am hoping for a 20" folder. Lines of a newer dahon. Light weight. Disc brake mounts. Frame only. I want to build it up..

There were a bunch of videos about how to make your own carbon fiber frame using lightweight foam core and tight wrapping for curing. Maybe you'll come up with the optimal design- lightweight folder with a compact fold, 20" wheels, 300% range IGH, and inexpensive enough for all of us (~500$). I'd buy one. In a heartbeat.

I really like Carbon, but for a folder it has a few caveats... its usually not lighter than an alloy frame, it doesnt like to be punctured in the back of your car trunk when some tools hit it...... I will get few alloy frames in, and have carbon forks.... ( well I am out but will get more shortly ) quite a few of folder specific carbon bits, where again not necessary its a huge weight saving over alloy, but they sure look gorgeous ...

I've been frequently tempted to try a SpeedOne Frame .. they have a couple of models and a disk brake option .. even though I don't need another project, I still may pull the trigger at some point.

I am not aware of a 20" carbon frame folder with disc brakes existing.
You could try this but I think you are risking death riding it.
There might be a reason why this is not sold in real countries with safety laws.

I would love to see more carbon in the folding world.

Depends on the carbon. My friend bought a no-name China CF frame off eBay and built it up with nicer parts than my SuperSix. But it still weighed about a half pound more. We swapped bikes for a ride and also both agreed that mine rode better. Like anything else,there's different levels of quality. And reducing weight is a big deal for folders since they tend to get picked up and carried more than regular bikes.

I know you're exaggerating,but think about that. There are CF MTB's and cross bikes. And if something in your trunk could damage a CF frame,it could also dent an alloy frame. Not to mention the damage that could be done to spokes,shifters,and derailleurs.

There's one more thing that makes carbon good for folders;ride quality. Small wheels don't ride as well as big ones,but CF is excellent for smoothing out the ride.

I'd think a Carbon-fiber Minivelo , ie, minus the hinges .
or something in Titanium with the hinges would be more useful

Particularly if the folded bike will get banged around, and the Carbon one gets coddled.

High end race stuff, when raced by the pros , really only has to last a few months at most,
the season
and then the team sponsor supplies replacements ..

Grand tour teams have a truck full of spares the whole race.

Its only the Retail Consumer that wants it to last a long time , which may be wishful.

I'm not talking about the look of carbon,I'm talking about the benefits of real carbon;less weight,better ride.

Plenty of Retail Consumers out there with CF frames/bits that haven't just disintegrated. I know two people who have had steel forks fail from regular street riding,plus there's the recall Salsa just had.

CF is incredibly fragile,steel is magic,don't touch your front brake,you can't go swimming after you eat......

Ori Surpaz is the only carbon folder I know of.

That Ori Surpaz is one cool bike. I wonder how much they are and if they ship to the USA ....
