How do YOU pronounce...

Have had some conversations with various folks about biking in general and more than a few times I've been thrown for a loop when someone pronounced something much more different than I do. It came up again yesterday and I wondered what cycling words do you hear "mis-pronounced"?

Example from yesterday:
Dura-Ace - I pronounce it "door-a-Ace". Guy said "door-rass"

Ultegra - I say "ul-teg-ra", guy selling a crank called it "Ul-teeg-ra"

Campagnolo - I say "c u m-pang-no-lo". I've heard "cam-pag-no-lo", "cam-pan-olo" (*edit* put spaces in my pronounciation to avoid censor)

Bianchi - I said "bee-ang-chee" though I've switched to "bee-an-key" after hearing someone else say it.

What other words do you or have heard others "mis-pronounce"?

Sometimes help to know the language. In Italian, the "ch" is a "k" sound (chianti) and the "gn" is a "ny" sound (lasagna).

Your interpretation looks roughly right, except G is silent when preceding N (think of how English speakers pronounce "sign") and CH is pronounced like "K" in Italian when preceding I.

So Com-pon-yolo is probably more accurate, as is Bee-ahn-key. Admittedly, you'll hear variation with GN depending on where you are. Like Rs in French, there's something gutteral which happens that's almost indiscernible to English speakers.

NB: Vowels in Italian and Spanish generally always carry the same sounds. Ah-eh-eee-oh-ouh (AEIOU)

der-ach-ee -- It's Italian.

campag-yolo -- because YOLO.

Mostly I assume I'm mispronouncing everything. I tend to embrace my heritage as a citizen of the nation that gifted the world with such gems as "vamoose" and "Croissan'wich." Over time I try to adopt pronunciations I hear from other people unless another way of saying it is more fun.

Disagree.

Around Boulder it's not unheard of to stumble onto an old Team 7-11 Huffy or Murray bike.

The 7-11 Murrays and Huffys were built by Serotta with True Temper and those are collectible but you wouldn't want to ride one of those Serottas. Even the team riders at the time knew Ben's bikes were failing at a high rate. Lots of finger pointing between Ben and True Temper for years over that mess. Needless to say what people don't know is you can find around here, anyway, Huffy bikes in 7-11 garb, that weren't those train wreck True Temper Serottas. You can find 7-11 team bikes that are painted up as Huffy that are actually Land Shark, DeRosa and Ritchey amongst others. Those non-Serotta 7-11 bikes are great collectibles and great to ride.

Any serious bike collector knows how to pronounce and talk about Huffy.

When pronouncing names, I let myself be guided by either of 2 rules.

For foreign language names, I follow that language's rules of pronunciation. So as noted above, the GN in Campagnolo is pronounced as NY, and the name is pronounced similarly to Campagnia with a different ending.
Bianchi is like the girl's name Bianca, with an I. In Italian they need the H before the I to keep the C hard.

For made up names, usually in English, I try to imagine what the guys in marketing had in mind.

So for Dura-Ace, we have Dura as in durable, and Ace as in an Ace pilot.
Ultegra, I think ultimate and integrity with the ra there to round out the ending.

Use similar logic to see how I'd pronounce other names.

Campagnolo - Campy

Lezyne -- I always say "Lay zeen" because that's how it looks but I heard someone on a podcast say "ley-ziyn" (rhymes with sign) and now I'm confused and can't ever remember what to say and get tongue tied.

Relevant because I have a Lezyne computer and mini pump.

I don't talk about these things unless they come up in conversation, and then I pronounce them the way the other person did; and even then, it's best to avoid words like "Ciöcc" entirely. If other people are arguing about how these things should be pronounced, I try to resist the temptation to add my opinion, lest I become pedantic.

That said, in my opinion, the way a word is pronounced in its original language is probably irrelevant if we're speaking English, but it helps to bear the original pronunciation in mind. So in an italian word, if an i follows a c, the c is pronounced /ch/, so "Gianni" is pronounced "Johnny" etc, but if a c is followed by an h, it becomes a /k/ sound, so Bianchi is "be on key." But like i say, let me not get pedantic.

How do y'all pronounce Miche?

I often mispronounce things to myself or my friends because I think it's funny, and end up accidentally using the mispronunciations in real life and looking like a fool.

Your link is the French word miche....which would be pronounced as Meesh in French but Miche's an Italian brand.

So I'm lead to believe that it's pronounced "Mee-ka"
