GXP crank compatibility

I have the opportunity to acquire a nice carbon frame to replace a broken one. The only thing is that it has a BB86 bottom bracket and my current one is GXP (SRAM Force 22). It looks as if there is a BB86 GXP bottom bracket which would allow it to work but I can't seem to find a definitive answer. I'm sure somebody here will have the know-how along with whether it's a good idea or not? I'm not a huge fan of press-fit bottom brackets but otherwise it looks like a pretty good frame.

Thanks

Pressfit SRAM GXP or any of the thread-together aluminum bottom brackets that are 41.0mm diameter and GXP compatible. There's at least a few of them, and they'll be less noisy than the PF GXP. More expensive as well.

Grease is your friend. Lots of grease.

Thanks for your reply but I'm not entirely sure I understood it - sorry. I'm a good mechanic but I find all these standards quite confusing. Would you mind providing a link to something suitable.

Thanks

John

The main difference between using a SRAM crank and a Shimano crank as far as the BB is concerned is that the SRAM setup employs a stepped shim in the left bearing; punch that out of an old GXP BB and you have a HT2 to GXP adapter.

HT2 clamps the whole BB between the cranks, while many GXP cranks just clamp the left bearing with the right side floating, but some GXP cranks use a wave washer on the right, IIRC, effectively clamping the whole BB, which might be necessary if that left bearing is more of a slip fit than a press fit.

Is this the part you mean?

No, that's the bearing cover. It's the aluminum sleeve that reduces the ID of the bearing from 24mm to 22mm.

You can easily use the crank to punch it out.

It's a shame, the thread together bottom brackets don't seem to be available here. Once I've confirmed it is BB86 (I still don't have my hands on the frame) I'll get the Wheels Manufacturing press fit version, I think. It seems to get better reviews than the SRAM version.

I always put bits like this together with grease. Would white lithium grease be adequate or should I use something heavier?

Thanks

John

That will work fine.
