Ride of Silence
Who has or is planning to participate in a "Ride of Silence" event?
My son and I rode last year and it was a very moving experience riding past the areas of town where cyclists had been injured or died in accidents.

Will be attending the ride in my area for the first time. It's about 12 miles and it is to a funeral home and back with a hearse as a pace car.

In years past, I've seen them during my commute, but have never participated. My accident occurred the day before last year's RoS. Most didnt expect me to pull through and they said a little prayer for me, before the ride.
This year, I'll be riding in my first RoS. I look forward to it.

While I sent an e-mail to the local RoS leader/contact, for those that have done the RoS before, if police are involved in the RoS, is one squad car in front of the riders and another behind them?
I am also wondering, if they will have the colored arm bands, for those that have either, been injured, or know some that has been killed.

My local ride has a police escort at the front and a couple of officers on bikes who ride ahead and block traffic at major intersections. I don't recall whether or not there was a police car heading up the rear or not.
Also, we did have arm bands, but all of this could vary from area to area.

I've done 3 or 4 of them locally; last year, the RoS was "ramped up" -- TV coverage, police escort, a lot more people involved than in the past; the route was expanded, too. But it seemed the MEANING of it was lost -- people were riding in small clusters, conversing, few people were wearing anything black, as was customary in past years. It was just another ride....
Although I personally like the hearse idea, people here would mistake the Ride for an actual funeral for a rider, and there'd be never-ending kvetching about the 'silliness' of a bicycle funeral.
I'm a bit ambivalent about doing the Ride this year; maybe it's the late arrival of spring, but I'm just not in the right frame of mind. And, there are the kids; my daughter has done a couple with me, she would pretty much insist on riding near the front, while my nephew would be near the back, since he's not as fast, and I'd have to hang with him.
Yeeaaahhhh...will probably skip this year.
