Silver Comet Trail Photos

I've a few photos of the Silver Comet Trail and thought I'd post for posterity. All images are taken on the trail itself or just off the trail.

Thanks for the memories. The fountain at the Silver Comet Depot is new. It wasn't there when I still lived in Decatur.

I've ridden Weaver AL to Rockmart, but never past there. Thanks for the pics. Someday I'll get the rest done.

And you need goats at mile 5. They love Kudzu.

Wonderful photos, thank you.

I've ridden it a few times by parking my car at the Atlanta end and then having my wife drop me off at the end of the Chief Ladiga in Alabama. I wasn't able to do it at all this year, but hopefully next year in the spring.

Honestly, it's sort of straight, mostly flat, and kinda boring after the first time....however, what it IS, is a quantum leap forward in what could be a very viable transportation network alternative, across our country. What the Comet lacks in excitement, it makes up for in actually ending up somewhere, safely on a bicycle.

The Silver Comet Trail is a great resource that many locals take for granted.

It does get boring after riding so many times and local motorists think that we should be on the trail rather than on the road. "But I'm going to Marietta. The Silver Comet Trail doesn't go to Marietta" is the way I have ended more than one conversation.

Even so, 50% of my rides incorporate a small section of trail in one way or another and it has gotten many onto bikes and in better health. I know guys into their 70's who ride 20 miles daily.

One of the main benefits is the ability to take the trail to other places to ride. I can ride 10 miles west and there are amazing roads to ride just off the trail. It's a gateway to better road riding IMO. As an example see the Braswell Mountain Road pictures below.

West entrance to the Brush Mountain Tunnel. Typically damp as pictured. I confess to having walked my bike through so as not to get it dirty (as in filthy).

Rock formations, approaching the Brushy Mountain Tunnel from the east. Sorry about the high contrast on this picture. On a hot day you can feel the cool air flowing out of the tunnel as your round this bend - it lets you know that you are close.

Braswell Mountain Rd. looking west, 1/2 mile north of Coots Lake Trailhead.

Braswell Mountain Rd. looking east.

Glade approaching Rockmart from the east. Again, sorry about the high contrast.

Since I am in Florida, most everything is flat. But the scenery looks great! And love the scenery around Brush Mountain Timothy posted. No tunnels here!

Glad to see the sheriff patrols the trail now. When I lived in Decatur there were too many reports of robberies, muggings, sexual assaults and other crimes on the rural areas of the trail.

I'm glad that the Citrus and Hernando county sheriff's dept, park rangers and volunteers patrol the Withlacoochee Trail (where I now ride) every day.

The Withlacoochee Trail also looks like a trail to add to my list of rides I need to do. And is much closer to Jax. Ron, where would you recommend going if I wanted to put in 20-30 miles?

Paulding County has patrolled the trail for a long time. I saw them the first time I rode the trail over a decade ago. The Sheriff used a quad racer with a shotgun rack back then.

They decided to give the poor guy an air conditioned and heated Smart car pictured.

Cameras along the trail are relatively new, installed in 2015 with live feed to the county 911 call center.

I love this trail. It is in the top 15 of the country. I can only do 20-30 miles each way.

I like going over the bridge and it has wooden guard rails. Be careful.

Somewhere in mile 15 from Marietta there is a free outdoor gym. Never seen that before.
