bicycle grants for nonprofits...
Hi all,
I work for a nonprofit, and I was wondering if anyone on the board is aware of possible sources of grantmoney to research and pursue urban bike promotion programs in small cities. Reply or PM me with any leads, if you got em. Thanks.

Although they're mostly involved in sustainable transportation projects abroad, you should check with the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy -- https://www.itdp.org/ST/ -- they should be able to point you in the right direction.
Also, check out:
Tri-State Transportation Campaign (you're in CT, right?): https://www.tstc.org/
Transportation Alternatives: https://www.transalt.org/
Project for Public Spaces: https://www.pps.org/
Surface Transport Policy Project: https://www.transact.org/default.asp

I too work for a small non-profit and we're hoping for a grant from the (Georgia) Governor's Office of Highway Safety. They provide grants for all sorts of traffic safety programs. Our is a Share the Road (motorists and bicyclists) program.
CT probably has a similar "governor's office" although I'm sure the name will be different.
The money is given to the states by the feds.

I don't have any firsthand knowledge of grants, but here in Olympia this nonprofit is actively involved in programs to promote bicycle commuting - they might have some info to share with you: https://www.climatesolutions.org

The best source of money is likely local funders. Spin it as a job-creation, skills-building, environmental, or economic/human development program (not at all hard) instead of a bike program, and you'll be surprised at how many local places you can apply to. Look into your local community foundation for leads on who's giving for what in your area.
Otherwise, you may be able to work with local governments or businesses to secure federal transportation grants for bicycle promotion or education projects.
