So I found a nice area close to my house that has minimal vehicles after the first 4 miles, but around 10 miles into the trip, there is a house where the 2 dogs are not chained up, and for the second time in the last week I have been chased by them. Granted it is good training, but I ended up around 30mph, and one of the stupid dogs kept up for close to a mile. Real ****ty part, is right before I came to the house it was quite, and then I heard a person whistle, so I'm guessing the stupid owner let em out. Any ideas, or find a new route.

A shot of water from a water bottle has dissuaded evey dog that has chased me. I can usually get them when they are a good 10-15 feet away so it doesn't even interrupt my stride.

Most dogs when they chase are either playing or just being territorial and are usually not going to bite. Just be careful they don't run into your front wheel, which will be a disaster.

Unless the dogs are in attack mode and appear to want to rip you apart if given the chance, stopping to simply explain your side of the situation to the dog's owners may be enough to wrap this up. Most likely there are laws in the area dictating that if you are attacked while riding on the public road it's the owners responsibility. Obviously you don't want to be bitten, lawsuit or not, but it could be something to bring up with the owners so they're at least aware of their responsibility.

I have to believe that most people who dislike cyclists do so because we're this strange group of people who they know absolutely nothing about and can find no way of identifying with. Perhaps a little friendly face to face explanation could go some distance to closing that void. Just a thought.

ride exactly towards the dogs and scream at them. that worked on a dog that chased me. it scared the crap out of him. he doesn't mess with me anymore.

If you can outrun them, don't worry about it. I think of these events as surprise intervals and just haul @ss, plus I always yell "NO" in a real dominant voice. Always works. German Shepherd on the ride today came out of nowhere. The dominance thing makes them not want to catch you. When they quit, I tell them they're good dogs. Heck they're just being dogs; doing their job. I do not care what the dogs do as long as they don't get in front of my bike.

Nonsense on changing routes. You have a right to ride on the public roads your taxes pay for so stand your ground.

Pepper spray the dog, call the police and complain, call the dog warden.
Ill trained dogs are a match to their ill trained owners...perhaps pepper spray the owner just because.

+1 On the pepper spray. I would not make it point to approach the owner about it, you never know how people react and you don't want to put yourself in that position. Do not change your route and do not use a chasing dog as interval opportunities , sooner or later the dog will cause you to wreck or worse. If you are on a public road you have a right to protect yourself from the animal. Pepper spray will do this.

i carry a knife and a stick. stick for if they get beside me, knife for if they bring me down. of course, both are last resorts. i do love dogs.

as a first resort, i'd drive to the owners house and tell them about the problem. if they give crap, tell them you have every right to ride, and they have every right to have their animals, as long as they don't inflict on your rights.

I'm thinking of going the Pepper Spray route. Besides I don't think talking to the owner will make a difference, I'm pretty sure the owner did a whistle since there was nobody else around. The house has weeds so high you cannot even see the house.

as a dog owner (fenced in) i'd say go for a spray bottle.. like ones you use to wash windows with but with water.. for moving put it on the jet spray so it'll be more concentrated and either shoot while riding or stop .. stand behind your bike and spray them while saying NO I use this on my own dogs to keep them from barking at people and fighting.

I'd try this before pepper spray and talkin to the owners.. the dog shouldn't be punished for the owners letting them do bad things. Pepper spray the owners if they don't cooperate.. be like "well this is what i would do to your dog but you're more likely to remember"

1) Actually I practice a really loud roar/growl, stand up tall out of the saddle and, if I see them soon enough, ride towards them which makes them the 'prey'. 99% chance it's good for a laugh...

2) Pepper spray should work but mental note: check the wind direction first!

3) If they're super agressive and the spray doesn't do it, let them chase you up the road and have a buddy follow and run them over... whoops! omg! Best thing is the owner doesn't associate the 'tragedy' with you who needs to use the route.

4) +1 Owner-is as dog-does. Don't clue the owner in that their dogs are a problem for you because when you take action (in whatever form) the owner may become your new problem.

Dog kabobs. Puppy pot pies. Canine Curry. Usually helps to boil the meat a little first or it tends to get kind of tough.

I don't worry too much when the dog is chasing me from behind.I usually just give it a kick in the head if it gets too close. I don't like it when they see you coming and jump out into your path. I called the animal control officer on a household where the dog was waiting for me and dangerously jumped out in front of me. The officer was on the ball and went out and warned the family within 24 hours and that was the end of that.

report the dogs. If they hurt someone later it makes a much better case against the owner. You have to really worry about 2 dogs, if they are in hunting mode it can be difficult not to go down.
