Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shimano 5700 105 road pedals?

Hello everybody, I have not made the switch to clip in pedals yet. What do you guys think of the Shimano 5700 105 pedals. I am looking for something that is easy to get in and out of. Also what shoes do you all like? Thanks in advance, Don

Get the model below, the only discernable difference is 1-2mm of platform width. Get an extra set of cleats.

Other than that, 105's are good. I liked them, but went with the 540's.

They're great pedals. I would recommend them over the cheaper 540 model, because they have more metal in their build, specifically in the plate where the cleat hits. They'll last longer, and they look much nicer (to me, at least). I picked mine up on Amazon from Shimano direct for around $60, free shipping and no sales tax. Plus you can get silver or black.

Any of the Shimano SPD-SL style pedals are great as they're very easy to get in & out of!

The 540s have a plastic base under the cleat which wears out. The 5700s are metal and never wear out.

I have these too.

They are my first non-platform pedals and they work well.
I don't have any experience with any other ones but overall they have worked well, are easy to use and have taken a few good scratches on the sides due to user error.

Was going to start a new thread but I think this question fits here. I was about to buy the 105 pedals when I've read a few forum posts that say Look pedals are much easier to "clip in" to (don't crucify me, grammar nazis). Something about the Look pedals do a good job of always resting upright whereas the the Shimano pedals don't? I'm not sure that was the reason, can't recall. Has anyone found Look pedals to be easier to engage?

Shimano bought look's patents a few years back, they are ALMOST identical.

Personal flavor at that point.

Yep. It's up to you, but many find the Shimano cleat more walkable, and the bonus that walking on it doesn't wear it out.

Have the 105 (5700). Wish they were a little easier to clip in.
They seems to not sit level which makes getting into them a bit slow.

Would love to try different types of pedals/cleats but that's tricky for all sorts of reasons.

I got a good deal on the R-670 pedal. Very nice. A little heavier than the Look KEO max, but I couldn't pass up the price. I would suggest to stick with the 5700 series as I don't think there is much difference to the ultegra line.

I have the 105s, and once you get how to clip in down it is pretty easy. It rests in a vertical position with the clip in part pointing up, so just kick off with your other foot and bring your unclipped foot to the pedal and pull your foot up, feel it catch, push forward and click down.

Sounds kinda complicated... it really isn't at all. I got it in about 20 minutes having never rode with clipless before, and mastered it by my first ride was over.

I got 105 5700 pedals for the beginning of the season, and I love them. In comparison to the old look delta pedals I was running last year, they are better in my mind. I like the fact that when I walk with the SPD-SL cleats, I'm not wearing down the clip in surfaces

Thanks everybody for the great responses, it seems the 105 pedal is really decent. The only other one that I liked the looks of was the speedplay? (little round disc). What type of shoes do you guys like? Thanks, Don

Shoes are a personal choice based on fit. You'll have to visit a shop and try a bunch on.

105 pedals > the 540's. The 105 sits vertical when not engaged and so it's easier to clip in. The 540 does not sit vertical all the time (cheaper bearings) so it's a little harder to clip in sometimes. For shoes try on as many as you can, I prefer specialized.

^This... I have the r540 but would prefer the 105 due to the metal plate and possibly bit nicer bearings(?). The Shimano SPD-SL cleats are easy to walk around on.

Shoe fit is different for individuals across all kinds of shoes, so unless you are willing to take a few risks buying/selling on eBay maybe, it's easier to try them on in the store. The sizing is totally inconsistent between brands and possibly even between different models of the same brand depending on the last they're built on...

Get the Ultegras. Better bearings and build quality. Around $100 on eBay or Amazon. People may be saying the Looks are easier to get in because they have a more pronounced front lip. But Shimano's build quality is visibly better than Looks.
