New crankset spacer question

I changed my crankset--same company and model except from 46/36 to 50/34, same BB compatibility--but I noticed the spindle of the new crank is 5mm shorter than the old one. The old crank has different numbers on it as well as "DB" on it which I'm assuming is for my Diamondback gravel bike.

Without the spacers the new cranks clear the chainstays but I noticed my right heel can rub the chainstay if I angle my foot. OK, so don't angle the foot, I know, but I'm going to now and again.

Are my cranks going to be loose or fall off or be dangerous if I add the 2.5mm spacer onto the drive side?

Thanks,
Paul

More info is needed on the actual crankset and bottom bracket on your bike. Internet specs show that bike having a "wide axle" version of the Rival crankset. Depending on the bottom bracket, you may not be able to use a standard Rival crankset. Adding a spacer is not going to make the axle the right length.

You can probably just put the 50/34 chainrings on your original crankset.

My first question, why didn't you just replace the chainrings?

I've just about finished smacking my forehead so I can now reply.

My initial thought was to buy new chainrings but my crankset (FSA Gossamer) has something they call "ABS" which stands for Asymmetric Bolt Spacing. All that really means is that they have a unique bolt pattern and you need to buy rings from FSA or pay more for aftermarket rings. Also because of where I live, it's not easy to get items shipped here so in the end it was pretty much the same money to buy the new crankset with rings off eBay than just the rings.

The smart thing to do would have been just to swap rings once the new crankset arrived--which I realize now, doh--but now at least my bottom bracket and cranks are nice and clean, and check mark for being able to swap cranks on my own.

Adding a 2.5mm spacer to the spindle may cause the crank to not spin freely when tightened.

Another option is add a pedal washer (or two) on the pedal spindle or use pedal extenders.
