Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Road bike riding is ...

A thread on the General Cycling forum made me wonder how road bike riders feel about the act of riding a road bike.

Road bike riding is...bleh.

Means to an end for me. No races = no road bike riding.

For me it's fun, for a pro a means for winning a race and/or earning money.

Road bike riding is ... so much more than the two choices you've placed in your poll.

True, but this is just one either/or question about it. It's either fun in and of itself, or it's a means to an end (other than fun, than you HTupolev).

Road cycling is a fun, adventurous, freeing, exhilarating, exciting, tiring, exhausting, frustrating, enjoyable, strenuous, social or solo, means to the end of getting somewhere, training for something, increasing fitness and/or burning calories.

And that description just scratches the surface.

Do you seriously think I wear tight fitting and revealing lycra for the fun of it? What kind of a pervert do you think I am?

It is both and more.

Survey might be more meaningful if you expounded it to something like what's your main motivation for riding and include options like exercise, camaraderie and socializing, transportation, me-time, etc. But I'm sure it's been done already sometime in the past two months.

You can make that poll. This one is binary. Either cycling is inherently fun for you or it isn't. Easy peasy.

It barely indicates the direction towards the surface, which you might someday reach to begin this process of "scratching ..."

Why not "Life is .... "

I mean seriously, what's wrong with you if you cannot sum up everything in one of two words?

As the great and wise Japanese philosopher Yui Hirasawa once said:

If it wasn't fun, I would switch to a different hobby.

I wouldn't waste my time if I didn't look forward to riding. There are too many other ways to occupy my time if I didn't enjoy it.

Gonna be contrarian here and vote means to an end. Most of the time I ride to train.

Racing is fun, and sometimes I'll go on JRA/Joy rides, but again most of the time it's just a tool to help me accomplish a workout and get fit. If riding just for fun I'd much rather hit the trail and ride MTB or do an entirely different activity.

Granted, I like working out and exerting myself, it makes me feel good, but I wouldn't classify it as "fun". I think of it more as going to the gym with a lifting protocol.
