Problem using thread search

I am trying to use the tread search function in the Classic and Vintage "ISO and trade thread part 5" to look for a Stronglight crank arm, but the term "Stronglight " has no results even though I have seen posts with the word there. If I just search for "crank" I do get results but not refined enough as it lists all posts with crank in it and I would have to do a lot of searching.

I feel that using the term "Stronglight" should get results. Am I doing something wrong?

The forum search function isn't too good.

I use google with 'site:'

site:bikeforums.net/classic-vintage/ sales stronglight arm
Link
Then you can click Tools and select a custom range of Time (or past week, month, year)
The short text thumbnails in the results are helpful.

Doing this as an Image Search can be useful too.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Searching just that one thread:
site:https:// www .bikeforums .net/classic-vintage/ 1136042-iso-trade-thread-part-5-a .html stronglight
(..brain dead forum software keeps converting this text into a link. spaces added to show this as text.)
returns one result.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I use it to find old posts I've made:
for example (and I need to put rm -rf in quotes so google ignores the dash.)

site:bikeforums.net "rm -rf" prescription sunglasses

You're not doing anything wrong. I get nothing but absolute nonsense every time I try to do a search here, the app is quite obviously busted, has been for years, and really just ought to be turned off, JMO, YMMV. The poster above is right about using regular google searches instead, that's the only way you'll find anything here, and maybe not even then, but hopefully so.

Another +1 for googles. That's how I found Bike Forums in the first place. When I started riding again every google search I did seemed to have Bikeforums.net and Sheldon Brown links in them

I do a lot of searches, mainly for my own previous posts. My experience has been that that the Advanced Search function is only good for a single word, maybe a two-word phrase; and short common words and long words will not work.

Using google for longer,more complex terms seems like a good idea.

I haven't ever had luck with single words. I am just going to use google as that does the job. Thanks.

I recently posted this this quote:

So one word searches work for me. I actually found this quote by searching for “key.”

I've actually had some issues with Google Searching the website, and have recently have done better using the search within BikeForums.

Google, of course, doesn't like the old image format, so searching for old photos doesn't help. The new image format is fine.

I was putting my username "CliffordK" into the Google searches, and think Google may have had an autocorrect issue. Then, perhaps simply forgot some pages.

The Stronglight issue above is odd. I was able to successfully search for "Campy".

Is it also an autocorrect/spelling/dictionary issue?

You may be able to format your search a little differently. Search instead for:
Use the invariable part of the thread URL as part of your Google Search (leave off the last .html)

You may get a message from Google: "repeat the search with the omitted results included. "... which helps.

Oh, and if you do your own BB Code formatting, then scroll down and uncheck the boxes:
  • Automatically parse links in text
  • Automatically embed media (requires automatic parsing of links in text to be on).
  • Automatically retrieve titles from external links

Hi Max.

You can search your own threads by going to your own profile and in there you can click on the posts you made or the threads you started.
