Trying to get 1981 Suzuki GS550 running

i bought a GS550 receNtly. It had been sitting unused for several years. Cleaned out tank and sludge in fuel lines. New plugs. It will start and run but at 5000rpm begins to choke down and finally dies. Anybody have ideas for me?

Clean the carburetor bowls, and jets. You might get some interesting answers here. This site is for two wheels with muscle power rather than piston power.

Lots of our members know much about Hydrocarbon powered bikes too though.

Great bike! Is that the twin or four cylinder?

Ha, wrong kind of bike! But yeah, I would totally disassemble and clean the carbs. Also check the throttle and choke cables, lube them up in the housings.

The 1981 GS550 will have a bank of four CV carbs. These are very intricate devices with lots of small passages that are easily plugged by hydrocarbon fuel deposits, i.e. "gummed up carbs" You will be extremely frustrated trying to get the bike to run correctly unless you do an absolute complete cleaning of every passage.

Disassemble and clean thoroughly, if you are not familiar get help from someone who knows Mikuni/Keihin OEM carbs. Before you get to deep into it, I suggest pulling the tops off the carbs and inspect the slide/diaphram assy. If the diaphrams are cracked or have even a tiny hole in them, the carbs will never work correctly until you replace the slide/diaphram assemblies (not cheap).

CV carbs open by vacuum pressure from the intake tract, if the passages are blocked or any of the diaphrams are cracked, torn or have pin holes they will not operate correctly. Get em right and they purr. \

Good luck

P.S. Add Seafoam to fresh fuel
