1983 Trek 850
I am super stoked to get this, so sharing it here. Kind of a grail bike for me, mostly just because I like the color (dumb, I know). I will probably ride this a lot....it will pair well with my 890 for around town use with family/friends. Runs fine, and seems to be mostly original. Not sure if I will keep it as is or upgrade it with newer parts.
I got this from a fellow I approached on the street when I saw him locking it up outside the pub. This was a few months ago. Ran into him again the other night and I made a crack about "let me know when you want to sell that old Trek" and he did!
If you have one of these, post up what you've done with it.

Nice, that is an attractive color combination.

An 83-85 Trek 870 or 850 is at the top of my wish-list and in that large size, which makes it even harder to find! One thing I really like is that some of those years (maybe all?) featured 50mm BB drop, which is rare for MTB's.

Those are really cool- It's the beginning of the development of the ATB and into the "mountain bike."
Congratulations!!!
I guess it just shows- sometimes you just have to ask.

I've got one of those that I'm planning on using for my Schwinn High Sierra trekking bar project.

That's a heck of a nice bike. I like old mountain bikes and own three of them: a 1993 Trek 950, a 1991 Specialized Team Stumpjumper, and a 1988 Specialized Stumjumper Comp. If I ever find a mtb as old as yours locally, I'm buying it. I get a lot of use out of all three of my mtbs. I'm slowly un-modernizing my Trek 950 (the PO swapped out the brakes, cranks, and shifters) with some vintage parts that I've picked up from @Gartenmeister.

Thanks Miguel. I just love the early 80s ATBs. I have had a lot of bikes, and IMO the ATBs are tough to beat for quality, ride, versatility and price. Here's a few of mine that are in the same vein as the 850.
Peugeot Urban Express. Bought this nearly AS NEW from a pawn shop for $120. My dad loved riding it around when he came to visit. Stupidly sold it. Still not sure why.
Trek 890. Bought off Craigslist, complete and original but faded for $100. Proceeded to.....upgrade it. It is one of my favorites and I ride it a lot.
Super early Stumpjumper. Cool bike, $20 at a thrift store. Small for me and these are sought after so it went to e-Bay and helped fund other projects.
Diamondback Mean Streak. This bike is every bit as good as the Stumpy, but doesn't have the name so no one cares. $10 at a yardsale, spend quite a bit of time cleaning it up and sold it for a whopping $40 or so. Wish I hadn't, as the pedals are actually worth more than that.
Univega Alpina Pro. This was complete but beat for $5 at a thrift store. But it had nice parts. It is not complete now because I parted it out and made other people's bikes happy. Frame, brakes & derailleurs are available if anyone is interested.

the alpina pro is a nice ride - top of the univega's offering i believe. i had one briefly before giving it to my brother- as it fit him better. a neighbor had left it behind when they moved! i guess they could not fit it in the van--
