Mike, as harsh as some of these guys tend to be (and as much fun as gary made of me for crashing during my warmup when he saw me at a race), you do really need to pay a hair more attention. It's in everyone's best interest for more young people to be involved in the sport.
I think you should do all the training crits at rentschler field this year, and just use the race to practice attacking and recovering and going with breaks and doing things you might never do in a race just so you get better at them. Those are things you should be doing.
No one wins by going with all the moves. You have to learn to read moves and make your own if you want to figure this game out.
PS: Pain is good, you recover when you get the chance to not when you have to go with a move.

Thank you for the advice.
Has coddling tendencies.
Young fella (no fault of his own that he's young, and we hate him for that) doesn't understand the mental aspect and the power the brain has to control and direct energies, block pain, react on impulse, calculate alternatives, call upon adrenaline, cull from past experience, focus on minutia and simultaneously do all these things required for optimal performance in a race setting. And do that repeatedly. Take's time, experience and repetition.
There's a reason why boot camp works so effectively on 18 y.o's. Knocks the teenager right out of the man. He needs a drill sergeant yelling at him. A coach will do instead. As men age, they naturally have the teenager beat out of them in one form or another, but for athletes, if they don't take advantage of proper coaching, their chances slip away to be able to compete at peak form.
Mark Cavendish's story is good example.

I went to Brooklyn by mistake. The scary part is that's not the dumbest way I've ever missed a race before. I did scout next week's TT course afterwards. Not a chance. Trees and boulders across the road every 200 meters for 4 miles.

cleaning up my life and stuff like that...
making tranquility - while not what I wanted for today, it will make my next week(s) of work/training/living go much better.

Not necessarily true.
Both you and I had "off" days yesterday. Today I ate the same breakfast that I had yesterday and felt a million times better on the bike today. Maybe it ain't breakfast.
Going back one more meal brings me to Friday night. My wife and I go to "Wine and Cheese Gallery" to sit outside and have a glass of wine and a little bread, cheese, and fruit. One of the owners comes out to chat with us (we know him from way back) and gives us a cut rate on the monthly wine tasting going on inside the shop. There was some cheese and bread to go along with the tastings. That was Friday night's dinner.
Maybe I didn't have the right meal the night before.

And then I remember why most of my relationships are dysfunctional. Lol.

I didn't eff up. Just got beat. It was a long long sprint. Had to be 400 meters. I just didn't have enough to come around that last guy.

My Mom is here today with her new iPad. Very cool. It will take using it to get used to the interface, but initial impressions are that it is indeed a game changing device. The touch interface is outstanding. The virtual keypad works great, bigger size helps a lot vs. the iPhone.

So im in graduate school for what some will call a "difficult" field of study. Here's a case of being "smart" but having no common sense. I've been eating chips'n'salsa for the last 20 minutes totally annoyed at getting salsa on my hand caues the salsa jar was low and I had to reach in. 20 minutes later I realize that if i tilt the jar, I can get the chips into the salsa without getting my hand salsa'ed.

I was manning the recording booth the other day when TA'ing for a bio class. I started playing with the volume and stuff just to see the prof get frazzled. It was pretty amusing.
