Agree...that's not much money on a bike that looks and functions that well.

Hi Everyone,

Got it as a neglected, rusty heap. Now it gets me all over town! I have plans to squeeze it into a suitcase on my next trip, but it hasn't happened yet.
Here it is on top of its Dahon buddy on a road trip. Maybe I'll post some photos of the Dahon later.

Hi. (fake -- meaningless -- internet-name) here.
56, male, 6'1" and 215 lb.
ICBM 41N73W approx. (between Boston and New York City in the USA)
Dahon Speed P8 -- a CL find for USD $300, including a CatEye
Urban Wireless bike computer (installed and working correctly)
and an ArcLite rear rack with the tri-bungee thing. Like new,
except for some minor scuffs to the paint where it was probably
transported without protecting the finish.
Seat pump, Schwalbe Big Apple 20x2.00 (50-406) tires.
I don't understand how Dahon's P8 or D7 designations map to anything
except number of sprockets on the rear cassette/freewheel.
The lady's storyline was that the owner bought the P8 on impulse,
and that she was selling it for him (ostensibly because she had
CL sales skills and experience to leverage). Bike shows almost
no wear (or dirt) from being ridden; nor corrosion except the
threaded holes under the little plastic caps (where a front rack
would be mounted to the head tube).
She was surprised to learn I'd hopped a commuter bus to get to
a city hub 20 miles distant, at o'dark thirty, on spec -- we had
not yet spoken. Luckily, she answered her phone pretty early
in the day (about eightish) on my third try from the train station
(where I was sheltering).
The phone number listed on CL was in a telephone exchange that
I happened to have had a phone listed in, a long time ago, so I
recognized it right away -- that marked it as a landline, rather
than a mobile number. And she'd mentioned the neighborhood,
which has a recognized name that I knew about, in the ad.
So it was a pretty good bet she (and the bike) were in the right
area to make an efficient sale likely, if only she would answer
the telephone at the number she'd listed the very night before.
It would have cost me a whole day (and did, anyway) to make
the first, necessary trip by commuter bus -- they only run early
in the mornings, and late in the afternoons. It's a route I take,
often, but ordinarily on proper business, so I'm indoors except
to make transit connections. This day happened to be an
unusual 53°F dry day in midwinter.
Like many here, I'd looked at CraigsList periodically, looking for
a decent folder. The new (for me) Android app made the difference --
made it much more straightforward to keep an eye on the used
bicycle listings there. I was pretty surprised to see a folder (any
folder!) listed in such good shape -- never mind the price.
And I liked the price.
The bike has an LBS sticker -- I'd been there, once. The place was
half a step up from a department store or a toy store, but who knows
how much they'd upgraded since I visited them (possibly prior to
1973). They were on my list of places to visit (also by commuter
bus connections) in search of a new folder (at retail). A project I'd
dragged my feet on, since I needed other things bicycle (and other
things, general) and I figured I was in for five hundred bux, to get
something I'd want.
A FRIEND and I went to the local deli today, for lunch -- on my two
newest bikes. I took the folder; he got the 26" (49-559) wheeled one.
He was pressed for time, so the bikes bought us about seven minutes,
one-way. The deli had big windows and a decent spot right in front
of them, to park the bikes -- so no locks to add to the time-burden.
The way home was to the automobile dealership, to pick up his
vehicle (the entire reason he was available to me was that his
car was in the shop, and he was on foot! nearby). The folder went
into his back seat (which is not usually empty, but just happened
to be, today) and I took the 559-wheeled bike home -- he followed
in his car, passed me, and had the folder out and on the curbside
by the time I rolled up to meet him.
It's difficult to imagine a better (scripted) storyline (like in a Mentos
commercial) except for the (requisite) skirt. This was a good folder
demo (I had a good day in the city on the Dahon Speed P8, the day
I acquired it, too).
So it was nice to see the theory of a folding bicycle pay off in real
(and somewhat uncontrived) use.
The fresh-maker!
