Like your distant relatives, they probably don't even recognize the behavior as problematic. People have a real blind-spot when it comes to the behavior of their pets, children and president.

Well, you have to admit, a dog committing suicide is rather rare. Cesar must have been devastated, it was the one thing he forgot to teach the dog "No suicide. Bad dog! You'll go to Hell!"

I doubt if they recognize that this is a problem. They likely apply the "dogs will be dogs" philosophy same as with their kids.

OP - the dog you encountered has an owner problem. Dogs are pack animals and need to clearly understand the pack structure - especially if the dog only interacts with the owner with no other dogs in the house. If the owner is not the pack leader the dog can be a problem in various ways.

Not much you can do in the social setting you describe, but there is no way I would allow my dog to behave in the manner you describe.

or... there's no way my wife would allow that behavior...she's the pack leader.

People that play with the dog and kiss the dog then get you a glass of water. Suddenly, I'm no longer thirsty.

I love other peoples' dogs. Well...Most of them. I am the guy who says "Hi, buddy!" to dogs on the street. But I will never be able to comprehend the people who lets their dogs lick them all over the mouth.

Is there any medical history of humans contracting diseases from dogs?

* watches Rover roll in a dead opossum, eat cat feces, wash cat feces down with toilet water, and then eagerly lick taint region for 1/2 hour in front of the TV *

To know certain things, you don't need scholarly studies done by scientists in lab coats, they're fairly obvious.

I know it seems disgusting, but that doesn't mean it's factually dangerous. Is there an actual documented medical threat? I would expect maybe doctors or nurses would be aware that it's common for instance to see pinkeye from dogs licking faces

I'll stay away from marmot kidneys from now on. Probably avoid marmot liver as well, just to be safe.
