"Gearsplaining"

You've all heard of "mansplaining," this is the sports version.
Recently, an old friend of mine took an evening walk on a quiet road near his home in the Southwest. He was carrying a camping lantern. Near the end of his stroll, an outdoorsy couple we both know drove by, said a quick hello, then went on their way. The hazing came via e-mail a short time later. “Nice lantern, bro,” wrote the outdoorsy guy. The woman followed up, gearsplaining that “there are these things called headlamps.”

Trigger warning, this is next to an article called "Trail Runners are Lazy Parasites."

Yeeeaaahhh... pretty much. Thanks, social media pressure that turns adults into self-conscious adolescents.

Heck, I was still wearing jorts on long walks up 'til 2015. Then I lost so much weight my big boy 36 waist shorts didn't fit anymore. Now even my 32's are getting saggy.

Trail shoes? RBX, $20 from Ross or Marshall's, thanks.

Fortunately the cycling groups I ride with are mostly fashion unconscious. Even the roadie club's B-group tends to dress down, like it's a badge of irony to ride their best bikes while wearing their most raggedy top shelf brand but old see-through jerseys and holey shorts... but only on this particular group ride. There's something satisfying about seeing a guy wearing a Rapha jersey that's so worn it's almost transparent, who has 10 years and 30 lbs on me, making me huff and puff to hold his wheel. If I gotta get old, I wanna get old like those dudes.

I thought this was going to be about gear ratios, 1X drivelines and IGH and end with another recommendation of the fixie lifestyle.

And it just as easily could have been about any of us explaining why crosschaining or "you're in the wrong gear" to someone who knows what shoes go with that outfit.
