Single Speed Cruisers

How many people here commute on single speed cruisers?
I don't but would like to buy one. I currently ride on older rigid mountain bike and love the balloon tire ride and sturdyness for going over many rough roads and paths. But I would really like to try a cruiser for its relliability and ease of maintenance. Plus I guess my legs would really get a good workout on the hills!

There sure are some nice cruisers out there.

I spent about a year on a five speed derailleur'd cruiser. Heavy as ****, but surprisingly practical with fenders and a rack+milk crate. Very much a tank.

I agree, it's a rock-solid tank. I don't see anything wrong with commuting on a cruiser. Just don't expect to go very fast. I've used single speed cruisers before, and it's a lot like the bikes I rode as a kid, with the backpedaling coaster brake and all.

They're fun transportation for short distances.... its cool to go out on a ride on a chopper just to turn people's heads.... but they're not practical for long distance day to day commuting.

If you change the handlebars to something more useful like a Northroad [3 speed handlebar] or even a MTB bar, cruisers aren't that bad.
