Newbie Question: Installing Bar Ends??

Hi Ya'll! I just got some bar ends from Pricepoint and want to install them on my MTB, a Marin Hawk Hill. Installation "seems" fairly simple just by looking at the bar ends(pic of them attached). I'm guessing I need to cut the rubber grips correct? Is that all? Just cut them an inch or so, just enough to clamp on the bar ends? Anything else I need to do? Read somewhere that I need to slide the shifters over? How does one do this? I am a girl and not good with mechanics...should I just take it to the LBS for this?

yeah, you can cut your grips if you wish but it will reduce space for your hands. it may be just best to slide everything down a bit more. just take your time and you'll be fine.

It would help if you cut the grips "off" the bars. Meaning, take them off.

And how would he get them back on after he's installed the barends? On the other hand, if you're saying that it's easier to take them off and cutting the holes while they're off the bar, that may be true.

Here's how you do it. If you need the extra grip space, then cut holes big enough for the bar to fit through on the ends of the grips. Slide the grips inwards leaving enough space for the barends.

Put the bar ends on and enjoy.

Alternatively, you can just remove the grips all together. And use bar tape. Don't move the shifters or brake leavers unless you need more space to use them.

I would just move the grips and brake levers in by the width of the bar end clamps, unless you like having your handlebars as wide as possible. Depending on how/where you ride, narrower bars can be good (although they are definitely out of fashion right now).

Yeah, that's the way to roll.
