Are You a "Roadie"?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I would say that if a cyclist is prepared to, would seriously consider, or is in the habit of participating in road races or timed events, that person is decidedly a roadie. There may be other sufficient qualifications, but this would make it automatic.

I think all roadie norms can be traced back to this single common mental state (lycra, equipment obsessions and weight weenieism, strava, certain behavioral norms, etc.).
For sure all roadies don't wear lycra and aren't on strava. But we do all seem to have a little OCD.

If your PRIMARY bike is a "gravel bike" then you are not a roadie.

Any real roadie would not call it a gravel bike unless they valued gravel over pavement.
If due to limited budget they only had a gravel bike GIVEN TO THEM and had no choice, then they could have the title of Roadie.
If they chose a gravel over a "Paved Road Bike" they do not get that title.

Yes, I am and have always been a roadie.

But I understand that they now have a 12-step program for the condition.

What if you have two bikes, one "Paved Road Bike" and one gravel bike and it's like choosing a favorite child?

As posted above. It is your PRIMARY bike that counts.
You must choose before making such a statement. If you do not know, then you do not give yourself that title.

For those with only one kid it is much easier to state which is your favorite.

I just call it my "bike." Anybody I'm going to talk to about this stuff can take a quick look at it and know exactly where and how I ride it. Anybody who can't, well, we can be friends, we just don't need to talk about cycling.

What if your SECONDARY bike takes up more mindshare than the PRIMARY bike of a fellow that considers him/herself to be a roadie?

Then you need to look up the definition of PRIMARY.

Is a gravel bike still a gravel bike if it doesn't have tires suitable for gravel? Is it then a "Paved Road Bike"?

It is a gravel bike if the one who owns it declares it that.

Similarly to "Serious Cyclist", I identify as a Roadie because I ride a Road Bike and I ride it on the Road. I'm just not a good example of one.
